The problem here is identifying correlation as distinct from causation. For instance, the raw data that a disproportionate number of black men are in jail could be indicative of a few different things: 1. Black men are just criminal in nature, 2. The system is skewed against black men, 3. The types of crimes black men are likely to commit are punished more seriously, ect.

Without trying to control for the other possible factors, we're left with a statement without a while lot of real meaning behind it. Reason with me for a second:

The children whose fathers are more involved tend to do better overall. Let's try to think of at least three explanations:

Aetheralloy's explanation here: children benefit from male influence in their lives.
The children whose parents are more involved have a predisposition (perhaps on a genetic level) to succeed.
Parents who are more involved tend to be wealthier (i.e they can be more involved because they have the resources to be involved), and more educated, both of which also correlate with the success of their children.

So remind me here... Is it politically incorrect and horrible to say children benefit from interacting with both a male parent and a female parent more than from just a single gender?

It seems obvious that children would learn more by having exposure to both perspectives than only with one.. and yet I get the feeling I'll be flamed and downvoted by some for saying so.

I have 4 sons and have always been amazed by something possibly explained here. I would have thought the chance of having ONE exceptional child per family would be unusual but somehow to a point that actually shocks me, all of my boys are strangely bright. With this article in mind I wonder if the connection is that my ex (their dad) not only reads to them he includes them in household improvement projects, rockclimbing, golf, camping, surfing and even cooking. He may not live with us but when he does spend time with them he is 100% present and involves them in everything.
