As an ex-correctional officer, I can say that it definitely happens a lot more than the average person is led to believe. Even then, most of the male offenders get arrested after responding to abuse in kind.

The female offenders were much, much, MUCH less cooperative.

It certainly sounds like these issues are taken more seriously now. Not so long ago, it would have read "sometimes even men can become victims of domestic violence" at best.
