I am suspicious of marriage simply because its proponents only seem to use shaming language to get me to marry someone. Any argument based on personal attacks is a weak argument. Additionally, marriage overdetermines a relationship. To overdetermine is to have an excess number of factors causing something to occur, the 'something' being a long term relationship. Marriage is one determining factor, but it should be unnecessary given the other factors which are supposed to motivate a long term relationship, such as mutual attraction and children. If you need a marriage contract to keep you together, you don't have the other, more vital factors in place. This is similar to my reasons for scorning moral behaviour that is motivated by a belief in a god. Moral behaviour should occur for the sake of being moral. A long term relationship should occur for the sake of children and/or due to mutual attraction, not some contract with the state and due to shaming language from one's parents and peers.

Another reason for my suspicion of marriage is that it figuratively castrates a man. Pardon my inflammatory language. The only men I know my age who are married are goody two shoes, and pretending to be so. It has cost them their authenticity. I would prefer to be an unmarried, authentic individual immune to the shaming language of others who want me to get married simply because it will elevate their standing in a social system which has produced the option of fine living for all without marriage - although they just don't (want to) recognise it.

and that's not even taking into account divorce statistics, which would be impossible to ignore if they were about any other product or experience than marriage. would you buy a product that was supposed to last a life time but which had a 20% chance of failure in 6 years? i think that's one way of putting the stats, but at least I also know in the US 40-50% of marriages end in divorce. If I was looking at a car with these types of reliability figures I'd pass. Because I'm immune to the shaming language and determined to be an authentic man, I'll also pass on marriage.

Perhaps one thing that's made me particularly immune to the shaming language, though, is my learnt mistrust of elders of you and my parents' age, since they have such frank, wilful disregard for basic skills of critical thinking and reason that their entire lives appear to have been exercises in stupidity. [I come from a new age background, but have well and truly moved on...]
