They even try to make it sound like women are the predominant victims, with spin like this:

Increases of more than 3% per year were seen among women, and more than 2% among men.

What they don't tell you: 27,000 male suicides to 7,000 female suicides. A ratio of 3.85:1. 79% male, 21% female.

They don't tell you these stats because they might take attention away from women and lend a compassionate eye towards men. And we cannot have that!

This should not be surprising. The simple fact of the matter is that men face many challenges in modern society that are often ignored or understated.

For all levels of higher education in the United States, women have earned more college degrees than men in every year since 1982. The gap has widened in every year since then, and is expected to widen in the future through the 2016-2017 year. Despite this uneven playing field, there are still millions of dollars in grants set aside each year for women. Women also have access to mortgage grants and other housing subsidies that are not available to men. This is in spite of the fact that home ownership for single women has outnumbered home ownership for single men since the mid '80s. (In 2006, single women accounted for 22% of home buyers while single men accounted for just 9%.) It should also be pointed out that women are on the verge of outnumbering men on the job market, and recent data suggests that women are actually being paid more than their male counterparts in large cities such as New York.

Another factor to take into account is the that this current recession has been incredibly lopsided in nature. For example, of the three million Americans who were laid off in 2008, 82% were men and only 18% were women. This is a staggering statistic that has largely gone unnoticed by the mainstream media.

The simple fact of the matter is that we are no longer living in a "man's world" and we haven't been for a long time. Funding for education, housing, and business is more readily available for women than it is for men; and men are hit the hardest during "lean times." Our society has created many artificial hurdles for men in the name of equality. It's just unfortunate that the media is content to ignore these hurdles altogether.

Men are slaves after marriage. Our society strips men of everything and then leaves them to work until they day they die with little or no enjoyment in life. Why not end it early? After my youngest finishes college I'll work another ten years then, I plan on checking out as a celebration of my 67th birthday.

This seems like a very small uptick that still falls well within the range of historical data for suicide rates. I wonder if the person who wrote the article actually read the study.
