A surprisingly constructive criticism of women who wish they were married but aren't, that for once doesn't lay the blame on men but on the women themselves.

The book may be another blatant example of sexism towards men but, to me, this book really isn't the issue here; the issue is this culture of sexism against men, strict male gender roles which are still very much being reinforced and shaming/disdain towards men who fail to meet those expectations(especially by women in the context of dating), all of which are still largely being ignored(which, ironically considering the source of this article, is largely reinforced by this perpetual cycle of confirmation bias towards sexism against women, which comes both as a result of feminism and preexisting cultural biases/behaviors; creating an environment where sexism against men is ignored and sexism against women is overstated). This book is simply highlighting those sexist expectations, or female entitlements, and capitalizing on the men who wish to make the best of the situation they're in(although, while it might help those men in a way; they are still, in the big picture of things, reinforcing the idea that this type of sexism is an acceptable or justified way of life).

You are correct of course. Good to see feminists with the right general idea though.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Really nice to see this attitude from a feminist and the calling out of other feminists was the best part. Until I read this:

Don't be freaking hypocrites. Women cannot demand equality and liberation, and then demand that men pay our way.

Good to see a woman saying it.

I'm in agreement and highly entertained by her rant. Thanks.

Great article! Written by a fantastic kind of woman that understands that women's rights doesn't mean shitting on men. A rising tide raises all ships.

Saw this in TwoX, and was so pleasantly surprised by the attitude of the author, especially since she seems to be expecting other feminists to read it. I don't think I've ever seen a self-proclaimed feminist blogger so emphatically call out female hypocrisy, or address the standards some women expect men to attain. I have no idea what the rest of her writings might be like, but at least this is a refreshing change of pace from normal feminist blogging.

Some of my favourite quotes:

"There are some fascinating exhortations about class in this book as well -- exhortations that make the link between class and masculinity vividly clear. In order to be dateable, men have to not give off signifiers that they're blue-collar or working class."

"Plus the authors of this book are obsessed with money and maleness to an almost comical degree. Men have to pay. Period. They have to pay on the first date; they have to pay on every other date; they can't use half-off coupons on dinner dates; they have to pay for valet parking. It's like reading Emily Post from the 1950s. If I might offer my own "Don't" to the ladies who authored this book: Don't be freaking hypocrites. Women cannot demand equality and liberation, and then demand that men pay our way. At full price." (emphasis added)

"What makes them think modern masculinity is so fragile that the entirely normal, even fundamental human activity of loving animals -- and the entirely reasonable decision that you like cats better than dogs -- puts it into peril? What makes them see this obvious signpost of "nurturing and willing to make a commitment" -- qualities that modern straight women are famously looking for in men -- as so repulsively feminine it renders men completely unfuckable?"

"Why do they tell men to be themselves, do what they like, and tell the world to stuff it... and then write a 184-page how-to manual for anxious self-consciousness, describing in detail how the things men like are appalling?"

[–]carbonetc 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I visit her blog often (she has excellent posts on the subject of atheism). She is definitely not one of the misguided feminists.

[–]ThrustVectoring 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here's what my wife Ingrid said when I was ranting to her about this book: "There are a million different ways to be a man, and there are a million different ways to be a woman." And we each need to find out for ourselves what being a woman or being a man means for us... and how we want to express that.

<autism mode>

Its a lot more than a million, since apparently activities such as owning a cat are part of being a man or woman. Apparently everything you do is part of being a man or woman. If you do one thing per minute, and you have to choose between an average of 10 things to do for each minute, and you are thirty years (15 778 463 minutes) old, then thats approximately 1016 million ways to be a man or woman.

Much, much more than a million.

</autism>

[–]ThrustVectoring 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why do they tell men to develop their own swagger... and then spend 184 pages describing the exceedingly narrow window in which that swagger can take place?

There's actually a decent reason for this - the difference between breaking social conventions out of ignorance or through deliberate action.

If you ignorantly break social conventions, then you are a social klutz. If you deliberately break them, you are boldly forging your own way.

In other words, you have to be aware of social conventions in order to pull off deviating from them.

Dude, I upvoted this and then went and read it and got about three paragraphs in and now your getting a downvote.

WTF, this is nothing but a lame attempt at appropriating and colonizing male rights issues. She doesn't want men to question this on their own terms without feminists and female permission and guidance because then men might come to some conclusions that might not benefit women and feminists.

This is nothing but more lame attempts at appropriating, manipulating and controlling the mrm. I have noticed a real uptick lately in feminist appropriation pieces and their constant meddling and trolling into the manosphere....I guess feminism is really losing it's control or monopoly over gender issues now that so many boys have come of age with it being shoved down our throats. This is one big reason the mrm is growing in popularity and even more is why so many feminists are always trying to distract and appropriate male issues. It seems to be almost a daily thing for feminists to come into the mrm and tell men to calm down and let's be friends, not all women are like that.

[–]InfinitelyThirsting[S] 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I didn't really see it as appropriation. Nowhere does she claim that men shouldn't be outraged about this and stand up to it on their own.

Saying that women should also be outraged about these stereotypes and expectations is not the same as saying only women should be, or that men can't be on their own. She wasn't even talking about how women will suffer because of this. She came out and attacked the authors for saying that all things men like are bad.

I know concern trolling exists, and that feminists can twist issues away from their main cause (like focusing on real rape victims not wanting to report being the "main" hurt false rape accusation causes, and ignoring the male victims), but I ask what exactly set you off? To me, she seemed like a feminist acting how we're told feminists are supposed to act--actually concerned about equal rights for everyone. Most feminists don't care, or discriminate against men. A feminist realising that men are treated like crap and taking up the cause should be a good thing.

Is it appropriation if they're fighting on your side? Do you really want to be fighting for your rights alone? You're right that most feminists who tell everyone to settle down are full of empty words, but I just fail to see the "appropriation" aspect of this, because it sticks mostly to how men are suffering from this, rather than twisting it around to just "Ugh, if men follow these rules, we women will be stuck with lame-o men". There's a couple "well that would be boring" type comments, but.

Do quote me what offended you, though, I'm open to being convinced.

[–]thetrollking 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Well, I could start quoting the article but one main thing is the PHMT tone of the article along with the blank slate theory of gender(sex) as being a performance. I really dislike, and think it's dishonest, the feminist reliance on 'the patriarchy' theories. She didn't point out how this was a common problem, but she said she agreed with parts of it, like no sandals on a man....see she's guilty to a lesser degree but is still making arbitrary judgements on maleness and she isn't a male. Women currently, and throughout my whole life, have controlled what the dominant and ideal and basically the only narrative of what maleness is and they apply it to the male herd in a cruel fashion while men have no right, and can be harmed, for trying to tell women how to act.

The book sounds like it's basically female psychological projection placed onto the male herd. It's nothing but a list of double binds, what women fantasize about men and try to change men into in real life and she thought the book was funny. She didn't come out and blame the patriarchy, but she waved off any real mention of how masculinity and maleness is a reaction to the female herd and their demands. Or in other words, it's not men that force other men to be stoic to the detriment of themselves...get emotional infront of most women and you will get called a faggot.

There are so many things wrong with the book and her concept of blank slate feminism that I could write my own book on it.

But to put it simply I do not believe in the concept of gender and how it's only socially contructed. Now I am not a promoter of gender roles, but instead believe in evolution(not pseudo evolution, like some evo psych) and how women and men have different mating trajectories that end up creating different dominant behaviors in their respective groups. Now to be clear I was raised by a second wave feminist mother who used to sit on the local board of NOW. not only that but I have had it shoved down my throat my entire life in school. I don't want to see women or men or any others forced into a gender role, but until feminists admit that the patriarchy existed only to serve women and that it's dead and that this has a horrible effect of boys, well I won't like anything they have to say. And no I do not want them or any other women in the mrm. I want to be left alone and I want freedom and liberty and rights that have been taken from me and other men by the femifascist police state.

The problem I see with letting women have any real role in the mrm is that they are inherently selfish. This isn't an insult, or isn't meant to be, but is simply part of their evolutionary design. This is why cuckoldry exists...hell, just look at the language women use in relationships vs. the language men use. Mens language may be vulgar but they are still describing beauty and what they like ABOUT their partner. WHile women say what? "You make ME FEEL special, happy, sexy, etc." Just look at the language and it become obvious that women take and men give. now, if your male, then you should also do something like go to a few AA or NA meetings and see how men respond when there are no women in the group vs. how they respond when just one female is around. The men stop acting together and instead begin competing for the females approval, even at their own disadvantage. This is biological and is called male-male competition and female choice. Men can work past this and rise above their base nature...Im still waiting to see women do this as individuals and a group....but it's not going to happen when women constantly have the power to redefine what is or isn't a 'good' man and by playing divide and conquer amongst men.

So much of the article is drenched in feminism and one thing that really urks me is how there isn't any mention of how men should define it for ourselves, instead she basically GIVES us men permission to own a cat. WTF does owning a cat have to do with maleness? It doesn't have anything to do with honor, valor, or courage and her article didn't talk about how those definitions are nothing more than a carrot and stick used to make men into cannon fodder. She basically laughed at the book and then made it into a post about her ideas of maleness and how masculinity should be defined through her feminist lens or prism.

Thats a little ranty, but there are so many issues here. I have noticed how women keep publishing books like this and females eat it up. I think it's nothing more than a shaming attempt to get the uppity slaves to fall back in line and continue being utility and entertainment objects for women.

The one positive thing I would say is this:

Atleast she didn't do the typical feminist crap of stating how men are actually hurt by x, but how women suffer from x so much more, but x still harms men and by harming men x also harms women so therefore we should fix x because it will help women.

Why can't they ever just see men as human being deserving of rights and respect on their own? Because feminists especially only see men as utility objects...sperm donors, walking atm machines, dildos, relationship and status objects, human shields, worker bees, and cannon fodder.

[–]RattusRattus 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have never, nor will I ever, call a man a faggot for expressing his emotions to me. As someone with depression, I tend to date men who are also affected by mental illness, as it's nearly impossible to explain to someone why you can't get out of bed, unless they've experienced it themselves. Many times I've been the locked safe where they hide their dirty little secret--that they have feelings too--and frankly it's bullshit. It's bullshit that we have a culture that denies men their feelings, that denies them access to the type of friendships women have with each other. The statistic that shows women are more likely to be depressed than men is also likely bullshit, as women don't face the same stigmas as men do when it comes to mental illness.

Call me selfish, but I'm tired of watching men think that they have to suffer alone, that they have to put on masks to hide who they are, that expressing weakness somehow degrades their strength--when in reality it takes more strength to get help. I guess I was using them to instill myself with some noble self worth, rather than trying to help them.

[–]InfinitelyThirsting[S] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

she said she agreed with parts of it, like no sandals on a man....see she's guilty to a lesser degree but is still making arbitrary judgements on maleness

I don't think she was judging maleness for that, just that she personally doesn't find it attractive. I don't find that or clothing that doesn't fit to be attractive, but that doesn't make the wearer any more or less of a man.

Or in other words, it's not men that force other men to be stoic to the detriment of themselves...get emotional infront of most women and you will get called a faggot.

I would disagree with this. Men are renowned for hierarchical insults meant to keep social norms in place--you see it in athletic teams, in the army, and in all kinds of male-only domains. I've never seen or heard of a woman calling a man a fag for crying, but I do admit that's just my experience. There are certainly women who shame men for not being manly, but throughout media and personal accounts, it is usually fathers and brothers and male friends who do the bulk of the emotional shaming.

but until feminists admit that the patriarchy existed only to serve women and that it's dead and that this has a horrible effect of boys, well I won't like anything they have to say.

Here I'll disagree again. Patriarchy exists/existed to serve powerful men, and degrades both women and poor/socially lesser men. It has a horrible effect on pretty much everyone involved, except the very top members of society.

And no I do not want them or any other women in the mrm. I want to be left alone and I want freedom and liberty and rights that have been taken from me and other men by the femifascist police state.

And how do you expect to get those rights if you automatically discount over half the population (since there are feminist men as well)? You'll always be a minority group and unable to do anything if you don't allow women to join the cause and fight for your rights. Would civil rights for blacks ever have happened without white lawyers and judges getting involved?

The problem I see with letting women have any real role in the mrm is that they are inherently selfish. This isn't an insult, or isn't meant to be, but is simply part of their evolutionary design. This is why cuckoldry exists...

So, if you're talking about evolution, how are women selfish but men aren't? If you're going to bring up cuckoldry (which has everything to with agriculture and nothing to do with evolution, for the record, as the concept doesn't exist amongst the vast majority of hunter-gatherers), what about the fact that male infidelity has been rampant, and even sanctioned, throughout most of history? I really don't see how it relates, I'm just questioning why you brought that up.

hell, just look at the language women use in relationships vs. the language men use. Mens language may be vulgar but they are still describing beauty and what they like ABOUT their partner. WHile women say what? "You make ME FEEL special, happy, sexy, etc." Just look at the language and it become obvious that women take and men give.

But you can't make a rule about how women talk versus how men talk. I don't talk like that. I spend most of my time eloquently fawning over how spectacular my boyfriend is. You're just running off old stereotypes, and while yes there are always some people who are like that, there are plenty more who aren't. I could even take the same things you said, and turn it around on the interpretation that men only care about their partners as sex objects. But that would be equally as ridiculous.

This is biological and is called male-male competition and female choice.

Actually, biologically we're built to polysexual, group sex for all. It's in the shape of the phallus, as well as the chemical makeup of semen. Instead of competing before the act, the sperm are meant to fight it out in the race to the egg. We're nigh identical to bonobos, and should look at them for what our natural behaviours are like, outside the reach of society. Even chimp females have multiple matings, where the female copulates with an average of six to eight but up to fifty males per day. Try reading Sex at Dawn. Most of the evo psych out there is highly flawed, or blatantly false. I can go into more depth if you're ever actually interested.

Men can work past this and rise above their base nature...Im still waiting to see women do this as individuals and a group....

Curious as to what you mean by that.

She basically laughed at the book and then made it into a post about her ideas of maleness and how masculinity should be defined through her feminist lens or prism.

Where exactly is this definition you're insisting she gives? All throughout the article, she talks about how men should be free to do and like whatever they want, whether it's be hairy, watch sports, play video games, dress nicely, own a cat, whatever. And I read it not as her "giving permission", but righteously yelling at the women who tried to create a need for permission--that no one gets to say what men should be like besides the individual men themselves.

That's I guess the interpretation of this that you are seeing and I am not. She criticises every aspect of their rules, without laying down any of her own. She admits a few of her own personal preferences, but at the same time says those aren't univeral rules for everyone, it's just what she likes. That is what I'd like you to quote, places where you think she's defining masculinity and/or maleness. I'm an optimist, so I will likely still interpret it more positively than you do, but I'd at least like to know what you mean.

trollking: can you clarify exactly what you mean when you say:

this is nothing but a lame attempt at appropriating and colonizing male rights issues. She doesn't want men to question this on their own terms without feminists and female permission and guidance because then men might come to some conclusions that might not benefit women and feminists.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

thank you, you put it very aptly.

She's complaining about women telling men what to do, but really she's the one appropriating men's issues into feminism. and in so doing trying to add a men's issue into her circular feminist ideology, in such a way as to redirect peoples attention back to women's issues.

Men's issues have fuck all do do with the "the patriarchy" or "gender roles" and quite frankly i don't want to hear about that shit.

[–]InfinitelyThirsting[S] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why don't you think men's issues involve gender roles? Gender roles are why mothers get default custody, why men are expected to pay for women, why men near children are suspected to be pedophiles, why alimony is so easily abused, why false rape accusations are so often easily believed, and a host of other things.

Edit: Also, isn't one of the biggest complaints about feminism that it ignores men and men's issues? If you think it's terrible because it ignores men, then you can't get all huffy when a feminist does pay attention to men's issues.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

you exemplify the way in which feminism is circular.

why men near children are suspected to be pedophiles, why alimony is so easily abused, why false rape accusations are so often easily believed

these problems have more to do with feminist lobbying than they have to do with gender roles.

Alimony did not even exist before the feminists came along and demanded it.

You fight the patriarchy(attack men idiscriminately) then men come along and say actually we're kind of getting screwed over here. So you reply see, it's the patriarchy at work, we need to keep on fighting the patriarchy.

this is why it's never really worth talking to feminists, you're all delusional.

also, we know the game you're playing. You're intentionally flooding us with entitled teenage girls by cross posting to twoX.

Alimony dates back to pre-US times from the ecclesiastical courts in England ruling that a man had a duty to pay his divorced wife.

I hate to say this but let's be realistic. Some men do need dating advise. I sure some of the author's advice is bullshit. And some of the advice is spot on.

And on the bit of this:

"Plus the authors of this book are obsessed with money and maleness to an almost comical degree. Men have to pay. Period. They have to pay on the first date; they have to pay on every other date; they can't use half-off coupons on dinner dates; they have to pay for valet parking.

Well, that just might be part of being a realist. The bulk of the women want and expect this. And if are not at least offering to pay up front, you won't be well received. You can be as upset about this as you want, but that doesn't change the bulk of women's expectations.

so what's your point?

both men and women do need advice on these things. In order to give them advice you have to resort to generalizations about the opposite sex.

So what?

are you going to expect therese people to start every sentence with "most men" or "most women"?

Get over yourself.

it's not that she has a problem with women telling men what they like in a man, it's just that she does not like non-feminists telling men what they like in a man.

Basically she hates men and wants men to behave more like women, because masculinity == rape. similarly she wants women to behave more like men, because all positive masculine traits are entirely learned and they ought to be learned by women who will not use them to rape.

thus she gets angry with women who openly admit the womens sexual prefferences:

The primary thrust of this book is that men ought to be manly -- but not too manly. They can't be girly or sissy... but they can't be macho gorillas, either. They have to find a perfect, razor-thin window of perfect masculinity. And they somehow have to not be self-conscious or anxious while doing it...since that's not very manly."

She does not like this because she beleive that gender is a social construct and we need less masculinity in the world, because masculinity ==patriarchy, except when women are masculine, of course.

Basically feminism is so outdated and idiotic that even when you read a "suprisingly excellent" feminist critique it still reeks of wilful ignorance and bigotry.

Where does she say that? Or are you just extrapolating, because someone who calls themself a feminist must be someone who hates men and thinks they are rapists? That's just as flawed as saying "Ah, a Men's Rights Advocate! He must hate women, want their right to vote taken away, and wishes to keep women barefoot and pregnant."

thus she gets angry with women who openly admit the womens sexual prefferences

No, she gets angry at women who say that all men have to be like this because this is what all women want, when that's not true. She even says she agrees with some things on the list, but not others, and that every woman is different. There are no "rules" for what all women want.

Also the article says nothing about the world needing less maculinity. She critiques their dislike for hairy gorillas and men who like video games as much as their dislike for men who own cats.

It doesn't matter to me at all, because the only thing a feminist is good for is fucking. Period. Well, and perhaps as a friend, if she puts up with me slamming feminism constantly.
