As long as you have lots and lots of your own money to hire someone to help you or a very strong family support system.

I am a woman and I would rather not raise a child without a man. Not as a moral/anti-feminist choice but because it is FUCKING HARD TO DO IT ALONE. I can barely take care of a dog by myself.

It sounds like a NIGHTMARE to me.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed! I have no desire to try to raise a child by myself, to prove a point or otherwise. Then again, I can't hire a staff to handle the child-rearing duties.

Or a government-enforced agency to extort money from the ex through cs/alimony/spousal support system.

[–]DOGA 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's true. But then, men don't need women for a family either.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I said this in another thread: I know a number of families without women in them. Two gay couples with adopted children (one of the couples used a mix of their own sperm and a surrogate mom), one widowed dad, one divorced dad with sole custody. They are doing awesome. What Aniston is saying can apply to men, as well.

[–]DOGA 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. In my opinion, a family should be a group of loving people.

[–]Honztastic 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

She's right.

But it's selfish and foolish to do so. It has been shown quite clearly in lots of studies that a traditional family structure; or at least 2 parents is better for the development of the child.

Jumping in before you have at least a partner to help raise the child will be detrimental, and all because of her selfish "I don't need a man" attitude.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

It is more reflective of emotional immaturity and self-centeredness? Women buy dogs now. They are dependant, obedient ... and don't understand any better.

[–]Honztastic 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't really like the dog analogy, but yes immaturity and self-centered.

The reason is basically "I don't need no man and his evil penis". If they really loved their future child they would want to give them the best start possible. That means two parents; keep in mind just two parents. Two guys, two girls, whatever. A stable two parent household is a serious leg up on development.

Sure children can be raised without a father--but that's just saying they can cope with an undesirable situation, getting through it even while suffering its ill effects.

There is a huge difference between a mother making the best of a situation not of her creation (e.g. her husband leaves her or dies), trying to make the best life she can for her child--and a woman deliberately seeking to create a child who will never have a father, simply because she wants a child. The former is putting her child's needs first, with her wants put aside as the lower priority; the latter is putting her wants first with her child's needs put aside as the lower priority.

These women want to have a child without a father because they don't want to "settle" in their own lives. They have to be in total control and get their wants and needs fulfilled in a way that brooks no compromise where they ever get the short end of the stick--yet to get what they want they are perfectly fine with making the child pay the price in their place, with the baby having to "settle" and compromise in an immense and permanent way right from the outset of its life.

The way this is justified is for the women to rationalize it away by trying to convince themselves that fathers aren't needed or important to a child, that the child won't suffer any major ill effects by not having one. Jennifer Aniston is assisting in this.

What kind of mothers would these women make anyway? They don't want to share parental authority, yet they are exactly the type of parent that needs to have a balance to counter their drive for control, for always being "right"-- a child is just at their mercy.

The truth is that no matter how loving a single mother is she can't replace the contribution a father brings to a child's life--it's a different and extremely valuable kind of child-raising, role-modeling, love and care. No matter how hard a single mother tries she can't spend as much time with her children providing love and support (or at work providing a good lifestyle for them) as a two-parent family can--the child comparatively misses out in one way or another. Then there is the mother and father's relationship itself and what it models to the child and teaches it about relationships, compromise, etc.

The costs of fatherlessness to a child are huge--to downplay or deny this in order to justify these women acting purely in their own interest is sickening.

(And to those who might say "some fathers are abusive and no father is better than that" let me point out that some mothers are abusive too. The existence of these bad apples doesn't negate the value of mothers and fathers in general.)

Women like her I see this way. They are unable to establish any lasting, mature emotional relationship with another adult, and so they create a human being who will be fully dependent on them in hopes of satisfying their emptiness.

I find that pretty scary.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

and so they create a human being who will be fully dependent on them in hopes of satisfying their emptiness.

Because adopting an unwanted dog or cat just isn't enough for them. Fifty years ago, women like Jennifer Aniston would be crazy cat ladies. Today, they're famous actresses who can get away with spewing arrant bullshit in public.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why do you think more women are trying to seduce 14 and 15-year-olds now?

[–]mariox19 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Number one, our culture is far more sexualized nowadays, kids especially. So, I can see where a sexual dynamic can occur and be fostered, whereas 30 or 40 years ago it wouldn't have happened as often.

That said, I think I do see your point; and if I do, I agree with it. These women seducing 14 and 15-year-old boys are sick (though that doesn't excuse them any more than it does men who seduce young people). They're emotionally and psychologically stunted.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Familiar with A Streetcar Named Desire? This is nothing new.

[–]Xdes 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I never had a father since the day I was born. Raising a child has nothing to do with a nuclear family anymore. It takes a community to raise a child. More than a community to raise good human beings. I have grown disgusted with both men and women alike. Men are assholes and women are crazy. If I were to choose, I would raise a child by myself with a group of close friends. It would be more economically viable, since we all would work and if one of us hit a wall, the rest could him.

Otherwise I am just arrogant.

[–]amartz 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You bring up a good point. From personal experience alone, I think that a "father figure" is very important in any child's life. While this figure for me, and for many of my peers, is the literal father, I've seen teachers, coaches, and other members of the community fill this role. The father figure can often be just one or more strong male role models.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why is she wrong? She's in a fairly unique position: she's financially able to have a kid on her own. She's 41, so biologically, there's not all that much time left. I'd rather her have a child (or even adopt one, what a novel idea for a celebrity...) than someone who doesn't want one have one. Plenty of kids grow up with their grandparents, or with one parent, or with gay parents. I don't really see the difference, if the caregivers are good parents.

Are there studies that say that wanted children in single parent situations suffer a detriment that wanted children in two-parent situations don't? I haven't seen any that adequately account for socio-economic biases and so on.

This kind of talk seems very close to the 'but two fathers can't raise a baby!' anti-gay adoption rhetoric.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think the biggest problem, and I know this is a gross generalization but, people who are unable to maintain an adult relationship don't seem fit to have a relationship with a tiny person that is absolutely dependent on you for all their needs.

I would say the same for any man or woman like this. If you are unable to maintain an adult relationship, you probably haven't learned many ways of dealing with relationships, like compromising, thinking of someone besides yourself, investing your time, emotions and money in another person and dealing with all the little problems that arise due to that. Those are essential prerequisites for having a child, and I think that this dynamic is what causes so many of the problems with divorce and custody. People haven't fully grown up.

That said, it's not illegal, it's only controversial. There are always exceptions of course. But generally, I would be concerned for the child in this situation. And I hope you can see that this is quite the opposite than having two parents of the same sex.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's quite a different situation, but headlines like this apply the same rhetoric. Holy shit, Jennifer Aniston thinks men are irrelevant! Outrage.

Where really, I don't think she thinks that at all. There are pretty strict laws for adoption. Many long-term foster parents (I'm thinking people who are carers for those well into adulthood) do what they do alone, or as part of an extended family system. I think that wanting a child puts JA far, far ahead of all those poor people who go through with an accidental pregnancy. Some of those people turn into amazing parents, but some don't. I would have thought wanting a child gives someone a pretty big headstart on the whole 'not being a shit parent' deal.

I'm not sure I agree with you about the relationships thing, essentially because I'm not sure that falling in love has to mean staying together, and I don't view relationships that end necessarily as failures. And I think that life in general equips us quite well with tools that suit parenthood. Anyone who rushes into having a baby worries me, but at 41, maybe she's worried she won't find the right person in time? If I were 41, fell pregnant and then got dumped, I'd have some pretty serious thoughts about keeping the baby. Different situations, but still, I'd rather judge people individually. Plenty of immature people have kids (hence the problems you mentioned with divorce & custody) and if those people can attain all the 'essential prerequisites' and still fail as parents and spouses, I reckon it's less important than we think.

I don't think the article is as inflammatory as the title suggests. Truthfully, all I could think about while reading it is, "Wow! She has big pores."

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She's just bitter, because Pitt left her talentless ass.

[–]meshosh 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And then he bought a whole bunch of 3rd world children so satisfy another talentless ass.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have to agree with that. Although, I'm actually confused why a good actor married two shit actresses.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She still wants kids someday? she's 41 right now, how long is she planning on waiting?

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow now I have a reason to dislike her yay!

[–]Arthaios -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I thought Aniston only got where she was because of her Farther.

[–]Gormogon -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This comes from the girl that Brad Pitt dumped...wonder if there's a correlation?

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

By implication, she is saying men have no place IN a family ... or society anymore.
