A reason for this I think is, "erring on the side of caution". They realize nobody will give a fuck if a woman if found guilty of false accusations, but they know they might lose their jobs if they do not punish the guy. But most of the time they are over zealous, instead of actually investigating and gathering evidence they just go ahead and presume the guy guilty. Ideally they should be neutral, but they are not.

If the accusations are found to be true, punishments is in order, if the accusations are found to be false, the accuser needs to be discredited. What bothers me that this is not 50s,60s,70s,80s where it was hard to collect forensic evidence and DNA. At that time a guy could be convicted on circumstantial evidence, and not having a solid alibi. And now people can be convicted (and if not convicted, accused and presumed guilty) just on the word of the accuser.

A rape accusation, as you said destroys the life of the accused, I was just reading an article the other day about a woman who was accused of molesting young girls and she was later found to be not guilty and the news report and the comment section was full of "how can a woman molest her own daughter" and "she needs to get her kids back from her sicko husband" (the ex-husband won full custody in light of this case). Its a double standard, when a man in a similar position would not get such sympathy and support (except from us).
