This is going to sound a bit harsh, but as a former victim myself, I do still think that part of the blame lies w/ Movie Boy and his family. If he has a disability that makes him markedly different from the other children, then his family needs to accept that and not try to make him on of the others all the time. His difference is obviously causing the other little bastards to pick on him, and that is "normal" behaviour. Kids are fucking cruel, that is a fact. Whining about it and having your mom write emails will not solve that problem. If you are different, there are are only 3 solutions, 1) go somewhere you are not different, 2) stand up for yourself (does not seem like an options here) or 3) deal with it. No one can fix this for him, and the more mom fights, the more they will pick on him. She is just setting him up to fail at life.

I was bullied pretty hard all throughout lower and middle school. Eventually I cracked, and beat the everliving shit out of every bully I came across. I became less and less tolerant, eventually delivering beatdowns on kids who would call me a name only once. This strategy came to an end in high school, when I slammed a girl's head against the bus for continually calling me names and belittling me.

I have struggled with whether or not this was the right thing to do. On the one hand, it solved the problem and made me feel better about myself. On the other, I was almost expelled from school, almost permanently kicked off the bus, and I gave one kid who I was actually friends with a permanent scar on his face (I accidentally stepped on his toe in the hall, he pushed me into a locker, and I punched him in the face repeatedly until a teacher pulled me off of him. Yeah, it got THAT bad...). If there had been no threat of school punishment, I would never have stopped beating on kids who made fun of me.

The consequence of putting up with the bullying until the breaking point was a severe case of social anxiety for the proceeding 15 years.

It's just an ugly situation, and there is no safe and happy way out without lots of responsible adult intervention.

There are two places in society where bullying is expected and tolerated: school and prison. I see so many parallels between school and prison (or at least my perception of prison, luckily I have no personal experience with that), it makes me think that the structure of our educational system needs to change considerably before bullying will be stopped.

Unfortunately, nobody teaches kids how to stand up to bullies. Parents are oblivious, and teachers don't care. Every boy needs to know how to be taught how to stand up for himself. They should really teach classes on this stuff in middle school. Low self-esteem and and confidence permeate all aspects of a kid's life, including educational performance. I actually think bullying is a great phenomenon. There are bullies and assholes everywhere in the world. Better to learn how to deal with them when you're 13 than when you're 35 and much more is at stake.

I got picked on a bit when I was younger until I realized I could fight back. It ended up being a common theme from 5th grade on that I'd beat the crap out of anyone who bullied me or my friends or anyone in my view. If someone thought they'd be cool and get their friends to help their friends would get beat up also. You get a couple people like I was and you don't have much to worry about.

Generally completely brutalizing a bully was enough to make anyone else who wanted to try to think twice about getting their face bashed into cement a bunch.
