I consider myself a political moderate and for years have been conducting an experiment: when people ask me my political standing, I don’t tell them I’m left or right, democrat or conservative. I just tell them my views on issues.

What’s interesting is liberals almost always say I sound liberal and conservatives almost always say I sound conservative. I think the lesson is most people are fairly moderate with similar views but we draw divides based on the extremes and based on insignificant differences.

I’d love to see the U.S. split into 3 parties: moderate, far left and far right. I think the r termed would be just that: extremes that only a minority endorse.

Nah you're 100% right. Everything is becoming so polarised.

Liberal-Conservative, Feminist-Mens Rights, pro-life-pro-choice.

People feel like they have to pick a side on every issue and that the side they pick must align with whether they're "right" or "left".

If you were to actually go through each issue most people would have moderate beliefs overall but you very rarely find people who would actually describe themselves as moderate.
