I think this issue is critical as it speaks to preventing sexual harassment in the workplace. I am sympathetic to anyone that has experienced unwanted sexual advances in the workplace. I find it hard to reconcile the often very sexual liberal take that North America has on sexuality to prevent sexual harassment.

For instance, when power differences between workers exist between workers, it is difficult for a lower-level worker to rebuff someone's advance in a higher position. I understand policies exist, but even within equivalent positions in a workplace, a worker can often have more social capital, seniority and influence in a workplace making rebuffing that person's playful but unwanted flirting potentially very harmful to your place in workplace politics. When men are placed in these positions, not only is their potential workplace blowback to going to HR but society would see a man as turning down 'easy sex' as being 'gay', being 'weak' and not taking advantage of what he can get. I am sure that more than 16-17% of men have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace and I am interested in hearing from other posters.

While double standards are obvious, flagrant and deplorable, I doubt if being as strict towards women as society now is towards men is the solution. Flirting, compliments, gazes, asking people out, are part of daily life, the basis of romantic contacts, and shouldn't be restricted to dating sites and single's bars. And the workplace is the place where people meet most other people. I don't know how rude these women were to you and I certainly wouldn't give women a free pass to be rude, but when we react to women who feel entitled never to be made uncomfortable in the slightest with 'then men should have the same right too', all we do is widen the gap between men and women, making the world a little colder and essentially letting radfems win.
