DEBATE TOPIC: debating the argument put forth in the VIDEO: Even in Afghanistan women are not MORE oppressed than men are.... throughout history women were not MORE oppressed than men either - also women were privileged in history and men were privileged too, equally but differently so

[this is massively in contrast to to the feminist grand narrative and core belief that is different in key ways: men were privileged due their gender, women were NOT privelged due to their gender. There is no female privilege. Women were oppressed due their gender. Men were NOT oppressed due to their gender (although "patriarchy" does harm men)

There is really no point debating this unless you watch the video. I dont mean that in terms of telling you what to do, its just that it all pointless debate "yeah women couldnt vote, work etc, in Afghanistan they dont go school" all basic simplistic arguments we've all heard before, and doesnt add anything new, these are completely covered in detail in the video, so watch that.

Good debate for an egilatrian crowd, and especially left wing as it discusses the rights of everyone from bottom to the top... the last point she makes about China, Afghanistan are very relevant.... we need to address how will we deal with those nations? We need to know if we want to apply egalitarianism. An important point to make, the argument isn;t the system in the past was good... no not at all... it is highly oppressive for everyone. We want to move forward and make a better system where everyone is more free. However, it is radically changing how we view what that system was in the past and in Afghanistan etc. and radically changes how we should therefore address equality in west and in eg. Middle East as it is not as simple as men are privileged and women are oppressed (in fact that isn't the case at all)

MY OPINION Prior to watching it, I absolutely (specifically the Afghanistan one) did not believe this view in its entirety and to THIS extent) and it would have sounded preposterous. However, the video has complexly changed my thinking, and introduced some concepts I didn't think about. They wound quite obvious once you think about them now. So thats another reason its pointless to debate without watching the video.
