Peterson is an interesting thinker, but very good at what the Germans call hineininterpretieren: bring meaning into the story. Sometimes you wonder whether he read the same book as you did, whether it's the Bible or Peter Pan.

F ex: Peter does make a sacrifice when he remains alone on an island to save Wendy, and then he says: 'To die will be an awfully big adventure'. When Wendy and her brothers arrive at Neverland, the first thing Peter wants to do is turn the group of Lost Boys into a traditional bourgeois family. Tinkerbell is definitely not his 'porn queen', she is as desperate as Wendy is by his lack of erotic interest in girls or even the understanding of that. At the end of the book, Wendy is not satisfied at all by being grown up, her inner self cries: 'Woman, let go of me' when Peter comes back. And you can compare Peter with anything you want, but not with a game addict or any cellar-dwelling neckbeard. He is an adventurer, an outdoor man, be it a small man.

Does that matter? Yes, because I think Peterson's conclusion and moral are also very monolithic. It is idiotic to remain the same person you were at 4 or 12 or even 20, but it is just as idiotic to totally cast that away and just become a useful, serious, boring adult. Peter Pan must not take over, but his core is a worthy thing. And it's a book that evades any unambiguous moral anyway, always putting the reader on the wrong leg. (We all know Barrie himself was an eternal boy, but even people like that can write interesting things.)

There are things which are realism truths and things which area idealism truths.

Idealistically, everyone gets to be what they want. Do what they want. Make as much or as little in the world as they want. I even have a great book from H.G. Wells or someone, "A modern Utopia".

Great little book. It idealizes how people can go anywhere (no borders), how people can be bohemian or paupers, and still love life.

Skateboarders do the Peter Pan thing well. They shack up 5 to a room to rent it out, and just skate all day. Who wouldnt want that? But they don't produce anything. They certainly can't be said to be of value to others.

And Most stop doing it by their late 20's. Because there is SOMETHING that is driving them to change.

Change is always a result of pressure on a system. People as systems who do not change in spite of pressure become very discontent as they age.

There is value in self improvement and all that, but honestly, everytime I think about this video I remember this article:

Discussion: The target is accused of being immature and/or irresponsible in some manner that reflects badly on his status as an adult male. Examples:

“You are so immature!”

“Do you live with your mother?”

“I’m not interested in boys. I’m interested in real men.”

“Men are shirking their God-given responsibility to marry and bear children.”

Response: It should be remembered that one’s sexual history, marital status, parental status, etc. are not reliable indicators of maturity and accountability. If they were, then we would not hear of white collar crime, divorce, teen sex, unplanned pregnancies, extramarital affairs, etc.
