Study finds that women make up 27% of arrests. Suggests “gender responsive” policies to correct this injustice against women.

The study finds that women are increasingly being arrested for the crimes they commit. It also shows that despite them being the subject of increasing “non voluntary police contact” (having the cops called on you for crimes in public) they are magnitudes less likely than men to be arrested in these contacts.

The conclusion of all that data? Women are being oppressed by the police and we should be working to create “gender responsive policies” (translation: sexist policies) to reduce the already low number of women arrested.

So much of that link is evidence of systematic inequality for men rephrased as a bias against women. Here are two of my favorite:

Women interact with police more than arrest statistics suggest ... That means that for every woman arrested, five more women were approached by police

In other words, 84% of recorded women's interactions with police don't result in an arrest. Eyeballing their 2015 survey source, this shows that men incur more interactions with police and are ~50% more likely to be arrested per interaction. So this statistic is really demonstrating the privilege women carry.

the number of women arrested declined only 6.4 percent. As men’s arrest rates have fallen women’s arrest rates have remained fairly flat. As a result, women make up an increasingly large share of all arrests.

The implication being that women aren't seeing the same progress as men, and that this is a problem. But a better lens is that women already enjoy relatively just treatment from police and courts, and there's less room to improve. An increase in the fraction of arrests going to women (but not in absolute numbers) is only indicative of progress in addressing the inequalities men face.

This point is especially worth stressing, as the same fallacy appears in multiple places throughout the article, and elsewhere in media at large. Men improving in a category women already perform well in (causing the comparative gap to shrink) is not evidence that things are getting worse for women. This exact point gets (rightly) made in reverse for many avenues of feminist progress, why is the corollary so tough to grasp?

If you really want to see the bias for women in the system look at sentencing disparities.

Oh I know I’m just giving an incredibly obvious example of the women are wonderful effect. Women are arrested 1/3 as much as men? Discrimination...

We're finally moving toward equality and now they're having second thoughts because it's not all privilege's, how ironic.

Women make up an increasingly large share of arrests

Why is this considered a bad thing ? that's good we need to make it 50/50 !

Whats even better is they acknowledge that it’s because both genders have had a drop, but because men are arrested more they moved more.

This is sarcasm right? I mean it is as sensible as saying women should be 50% of CEOs. Something is a miss when you only look at output and not input.

I'm glad at least a fraction of countries -I believe Norway? - removed the "women can't rape, can't commit rape crimes even against minors" sexist law, along with some other blatantly sexist and gender privilege laws. At least one country thinks both genders should be respected

Enlighten me. So if a women threatens me with a knife on my throat and starts cutting me if I don't consent to having sex with her, but I do so just to not get my throat sliced open, it's only sexual assault/exploitation, not rape? What if I'm tied to a bed after that and she has her way for days, that's not rape, and it's the same crime as groping?

How about if I was unconscious, passed out, had a drugged drink and she has sex with me while I'm unconscious, gives me an STD, and I was unable to consent ever in the first place? This also isn't rape?

How about when female teachers has sex with underage/minor students? Minority can't consent by default, it's illegal. This is also not rape?

Those statistics are a good argument for arresting and convicting more women. They clearly show female privilege.
