This is actually a good article. I would say, it is missing where some women do defend other shitty women in a similar manner as some men defend other shitty men.

Other than that, I'm impressed.

SIDE-NOTE: Have you seen my post as well? What do you think? https://www.reddit.com/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates/comments/f6tj60/comment/fi6v09j

Apparently Jaimee Marie Cooney is the first female teacher in New Zealand to be convicted and sentenced for sexual offending against students

Utter insanity. How is there not more outrage at this? A true "rape culture."

It wasn't illegal (for females to sexually assault males, underage or otherwise, in New Zealand) until 2007. Yes, you read that right.

That true rape culture is just rape culture. It's all the same. I think men's activists get way WAY to caught up in defending false accusations to the point where they can't see the horror of rape and sometimes as a survivor seeing that level of defense of potental preps is a little distrubing. The fact is both occur. And the tourbling nature of false accusation doesn't mitigate at all of the aspects of our culture that push rape as acceptible.( i used to go to football parties in college, a shocking amount of stuff you hear and see at such parties is indenfensible) arguing about male victims and false accusation shouldn't be a game where male and female victims are moved around like pawns

According to RAINN there's no such thing as a rape culture. I disagree, I think men are the targets of a rape culture that thinks is ok for women to have "relations" (read: not "rape") with men. And I think there's an outrage culture whenever women are raped. That outrage isn't targeted towards helping women or rape victims though. All they care about is demonizing men.

I disagree with you on the second part. Victims of both sexes are generally s**t upon with the exception of high profile cases ( usually where the victim is wealthy/famous). No one in the media is outraged if a poor person of either sex is raped. i do agree with you on the first part. But my experience and the lived experiance of most other victims i've talked to is one of shame, blame and fear being universal

It's like a mirror image each sex reacts to perps of thier own as if somehow they arent really cappible of it while questioning the legitimacy of the victim. It's very wierd

u/iainmf has a great comment about this article here: https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/f6k8bv/sexual_abuse_of_men_and_boys_is_still_abuse_and/fi6jwyc/

This is quoted in full below:

The good news is the government is now funding support services for Male Survivors of sexual abuse. But there are a few things that I think need to change

  1. Change the law so that rape is not defined by penetration

  2. Change the current sentencing guidelines that treat non-penetrative rape unlawful sexual connection as a lesser crime. Currently, a woman who rapes forces a man to penetrate, with no aggravating circumstances, is recommended 2-5 years, where if the sexes are reversed the man would get 6-8 years.

  3. Make sure female offenders don't get treated with kid gloves. Currently, they are less likely to go to court and get more lenient sentences for rate same crimes compared to men.

  4. Repeal the law 'male assaults female' which we only still have because Amy Adams, Jan Logie and everyone else, thought it was important to keep it to show we are more serious about 'violence against women' than treating men equally.

  5. Protect boys genitals from medically unnecessary surgery.

Changing social attitudes often starts with changes to the law.

I do get frustrated with these kinds of opinion columns which basically amount to 'can't we all just be nicer' when there are some real tangible things that need to change.

I also don't appreciate the author repeating a whole bunch of assertions about what it is like for boys and men. I doubt the spinoff would publish an article where a man explaining women's experiences to them.

I strongly agree with all this. I also have other issues with the article, like the fact that it mentions female-on-male sexual assault, but the 'solutions' largely focus on male perpetrators and female victims, same as usual.
