Coding bootcamps, TRPers familiar with the tech world, are these legit?

I know a bit about this area.

Yes, it's pretty legit. Some bootcamps teach the actual stuff. Others are to introduce people to coding. However, most people don't have the staying power or willpower to continue learning actual coding skills to get a job in tech. Where I'm from, coding is actually in high demand and pays very well (compared to other jobs in more common industries).

I recommend Code Academy. It's free, you can learn on your own and there's forums where you can ask from help from tutors or more experienced students. I was learning HTML, CSS, Javascript, Python etc. there for free. There's even Ruby and new additions since I last stopped.

Considering i've never heard of it, I doubt it's going to help. If you're interested in coding and working in that field, w3schools and codeacademy. If you're not motivated or interested enough to do those, you'll suck complete balls at programming in general.

Also it's significantly harder to get a job without a formal degree, but coding a popular game or app would do it instead. Wouldn't rely on that though.

They are..sort of. Learning how to hold a hammer and nailing some boards doesn't make you a house builder.
The overwhelming feedback I see from the code school / bootcamp job interviewers is that they have such a small, fragile foundation. You'd need to have the expectation that you'll be earning a tepid salary and learning mostly at your own until you get a great job opportunity.
For the lost part, what they tell you is possible after you pay for their course is significantly overinflated from an employer perspective.

Never heard of it, just over sell yourself online and take up some piece work on craigslist, and other posting sites. learn to do it as you go and just get the job done. best way to get exposure
