Really good article. It underscores why I got out of journalism and went into teaching. I was in college in the late 80s, and it was a time when talk shows were just becoming popular. Sensationalism was all the rage. I was taught explicitly that you do NOT editorialize, and you report the news as it happens, without inserting yourself or your opinion. I could see the direction journalism was going, and now it's there.

Ink will always run in my blood; I still miss the newsroom to this day. But I'm glad I went into teaching, exhausting as it was. Way more pro-social, way less editorialized and sensationalized, although stories about predators are always problematic, especially beautiful young women who prey on young males and how those women are represented, versus older, more plain women, and how they are mentioned if at all. Quite often, it's the boy that's mentioned if the woman is plain and/or older. Tells me all I need to know about this society, what it values, who it values, who it devalues.
