Childline is a volunteer counselling service for children in the UK, run by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). This most recent campaign to encourage boys to use the service, acknowledges that about 65% of services are provided to girls, and only 16% to boys. This shocking gender bias is consistent with child helpline services in the UK, Europe, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, where up to 80% of services are provided to girls, and the numbers of services provided to boys is steadily decreasing over time.

The common response to this shock gender bias in child counselling service provision, is to blame boys. Headlines like "mental health campaign aimed at boys as they are less likely to talk about mental health issues than girls", are almost universal.

What these services fail to disclose is that boys are not reluctant to talk about their emotional and mental health issues, but are reluctant to talk to people who are dismissive of their experiences, demeaning in their responses, or lack empathy to their unique masciline experience of mental and emotional health. As childline's own case studies recite (decribed in the OP's cited article).......

"I confided in someone at work that I wasn’t doing very mentally and they didn’t reply to my message. I feel really embarrassed about telling them how I was feeling",

"I would love to speak openly about it with my mum, but we've never had that sort of relationship and I fear she wouldn't believe me or take me seriously",

These two selected case studies (decribed in the OP's cited article) do not show boys who are reluctant or incapable of talking about their emotional and mental health, but boys who have been rebuffed/ignored by those they would otherwise have confided in. They want to talk but have no-one they can talk to.

Notwithstanding these calls for help, the feminist trained counsellors and supervisors of the Childline service state that the problem with counselling boys is that "it can be really challenging for boys due to the pressures they feel around not showing emotion and appearing strong due to toxic masculinity". This convenient stereotyping of boys as emotionally mute, places all the fault on boys, an approach that is cruel, unreasonable and not supported by any evidence (other than feminist based ideological studies).

The use of feminist hate speech ("toxic masculinity"), the refusal to look beyond the feminist framing of masculinity as a fundamentally flawed and harmful doctrine, and the clear intention of blaming boys for the failure of the service to engage with boys, reveal the real reason why the service is failing boys, and most likely causing real harm. The services are inherently hostile to boys, and incapable of empathises or hearing the stories these boys are so desparate to tell.

Other issues the NSPCC might investigate are the entrenched culture of misandry and gender bias that infests it's services and policies, or the gender inequity in it's service providers. With a workforce that is 70% female (higher for counsellors), many of whom are active feminists with hostile attitudes to men and boys, it's no wonder Childline continues to fail UK boys.

Clear, concise, and appallingly accurate. I hope you write more on this subject.

[–]TheEthnicityOfASpoon 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks. Spot on.

[–]antifeminist3 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It is still framed from a feminist point of view. 'Toxic masculinity' starts young with boys 'not allowed' to show emotion. They never say analogous things about girls/women. Instead it is 'society teaches women....' Well, why not say 'society teaches men...'? They don't because feminists are behind this.

By stating 'society teaches women..', but framing differently for boys, this implies more responsibility/fault for boys. I think it would be better to treat the boys and girls equally. Address the issue yes, but in the same way, not by an implication of fault.

[–]rabel111 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. It's the differnce in approach to issues related to men and boys, versus any other social group, that reveals the sexist bias. The difference in approach is never acknowledged, never adequately justified and always places the burden on the shoulders of men and boys.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Society should treat them equally but the issue is it doesn’t

campaign aimed at boys as they are less likely to talk about mental health issues than girls

It is factual to say that boys use Childline significantly less compared to girls - I don't think a campaign focused on showing that Childline is there to support young people, particularly males, is aiming to do anything other than encourage boys to talk to Childine.

There is no requirement to provide any details and nothing would be recorded as a fact unless it was explicitly stated. Nor would the approach change depending on the gender of the young person.

They may feel unable to talk to anyone else, or have had bad experiences in doing so, which is why Childline is there. Boys who have not used the service would not know whether or not Childline is dismissive of their experiences, demeaning in their responses, or lacking in empathy.

feminist trained counsellors

Again, the training doesn't focus on gender and the responses would not change based on the gender. And again, this isn't something that would always be known or recorded.

I don't think Childline is hostile towards, lacking in empathy to, or blaming boys - they aren't failing boys, not is it boys' fault for reaching out less.

"It is factual to say that boys use Childline significantly less compared to girls"

It is factual to say the number of boys using Childline is declining over time.

"a campaign focused on showing that Childline is there to support young people, particularly males"

Hard to reconcile the claim of being there to help males, with the use of controvercial and harmful terms like toxic masculinity, at best unhelpful, and at worst, gendered hate speech targeting males.

"Boys who have not used the service would not know whether or not Childline is dismissive of their experiences, demeaning in their responses, or lacking in empathy"

Assuming boys do not share informtion, and are uncapable of reading the room when it comes to culture. A culture lacking empathy is easily identified and avoided by boys (they're used to parsing this kind of culture). In a culture where boys know what to expect when they speak-out, why are you so confused by their reluctance to speak? How do you miss the need to prove to boys that they will be heard without judgement or condemnation, and that using the language of those who brutally silence them is not a neutral non-gendered position?

"the training doesn't focus on gender"

And yet the language used, and the conceptual framing of masculinity as harmful to boys, are all hallmarks of radical feminist ideology, an ideological position even the APA is now walking back, after substantial pushback from within the ranks of psychology as well as the community. The view that boys are reluctant to talk about their experiences and concerns because of their masculinity is just sexist hate speech, and not supported by any evidence outside of self-serving surveys using flawed methodology exhibiting cognitive bias and confirmation bias.

Sadly, counselling for boys too frequently starts off with uninformed assumptions about what is wrong with boys, and very little listening to what boys are actually experiencing. Boys experiences of adversity and gender bias in schools and wider community is dismissed as being delusional, misogynous, wrong, anti-feminist, and treated as symptoms of their masculinity.

Whatever your position, and I would suggest you will not change that position regardless of any evidence presented to you, the acid test is in the real world response of boys to help lines that continue to present as hostile, or be perceived as hostile, by men and boys. Keep on arguing by all means, while the numbers of boys using the service gets smaller and smaller. I'm sure you will feel validated regardless of the failure of these services, and justified in your refusal to listen.

[–]axerlion 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I can’t comment on whether use of the service is declining or not, you’d have to evidence this.

At a service level, Childline is there to help any young person. The idea that somehow en mass individual counsellors at the base level are prejudiced in any particular way is absurd.

I don’t think boys would be likely to talk to other boys about talking to Childline, it’s not usually something young people talk to others about. And again I don’t think young people at the age of 11 are going to be questioning whether the service is feminist or not while in the middle of emotional crisis.

The training =/ that article. It is a fact that boys are less likely to talk about mental health. I’m not blaming boys, it’s a fact. As I’ve said before, it is not because of the service and this is reflected across the board with mental health in general.

I’m not sure what your understanding of Childline is as a service, but ‘very little listening’ is not it. They exist to allow young people to talk, explore what is happening and in some cases use techniques to manage emotions or empower change. Their experiences wouldn’t be dismissed as that isn’t child centred - a core value of Childline.

I have no idea how you’ve reached the conclusion of helplines being hostile. I would suggest it is more to do with a culture of boys generally speaking out less about mental health for a variety of reasons - not knowing help is available, thinking there are other people worse off than them, having bad experiences of talking to others, not wanting to be seen as weak or upset. It can be difficult for boys, doesn’t make it their fault.

‘Childline counsellors hear from boys who say they feel isolated in their experiences and are reluctant to reach out for help due to the stigma they feel around sharing their feelings.’

[–]rabel111 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As previously pointed out, you have failed to listen, have dismissed disenting ideas as absurd, and parroted the same ideological narrative as a self evident truth without considering alternatives.

The acid test, a declining engagement of boys across multiple disciplines continues to be observed with no attempt to alter how you enage.

[–]axerlion 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

inherently hostile to boys, and incapable of empathises or hearing the stories these boys are so desparate to tell.

I’d love to hear examples of how, on a base service level, Childline are being hostile to boys? You make it sound like they’re hanging up on males deliberately or telling males that it’s their fault.

Childline are there for young people. It’s hardly the case that they’re ‘so desperate’ to talk to someone and no one is there to listen.

[–]rabel111 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

In regard to the launch of this Childline initiative, Alex Gray, Service Head of Childline, was quoted as saying “At Childline, we know how hard it can be for children to speak out about their mental health. In particular, it can be really challenging for boy’s due to the pressures they feel around not showing emotion and appearing strong due to toxic masculinity." (Helensburg Advertiser, 8 March 2022, "Childline launches campaign to support young boys")

The damage done to the engagement of men and boys by the use of feminist hate speech, and the hostility of the underlying culture of misandry that is based on core principles related to that hate speech, has been explored in peer reviewed academic studies.

I include for you below a study by Drs John Barry, Rob Walker, Louise Liddon, & Martin Seager and published in the Psychreg Journal of Psychology, an article by Guy Madison & Therese Söderlund on the quality of evidence used to support feminist narratives about masculinity and brief Youtube explaining gender bias. Try listening with an open mind.

the damage done to the engagement of men and boys by the use of feminist hate speech

I think you’re missing the point that Childine is a service for children and young people - children are not likely to have access to anything Alex Gray has said, nor be able to understand it or it have any impact on them talking to Childline.

I think you’re also missing how Childline works as a service - as I’ve said before, individual counsellors as a group are not going to be treating boys differently. They care about children and often have experience working in schools etc.

For these reasons, unless I’m missing something here, boys are not talking to Childline because THEY think it’s feminist. The attitudes of adults aren’t necessarily relevant here.

Unfortunately, just because a study is published does not mean that the journal vouch for the work’s authenticity, quality or relevance. One quote: ‘how they would feel if their gender was seen as the cause of their relationship or job problems’

If you told me that the cause of any problem in my life was caused by my gender I would disagree with you, and I can expect participants asked that question would feel the same way.

However, I don’t think that study is representative of what Alex was saying. The use of toxic masculinity (however you interpret it, and in the way that it was meant, I wouldn’t personally call it hate speech) was not meant to suggest that it’s boys fault or they’re not talking inherently because they’re boys. I think it’s more realistic that the culture makes it so that boys don’t talk about mental health because, for example, (for children in particular) crying is seen as a weakness, they don’t think services are for them, and they want to fit in with the stereotypes of men they see and be normal (being fine, being able to cope, not needing to talk about their mental health).

[–]rabel111 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You really are just a feminist tool. As I said previously, nothing, peer reviewed research by qualified psychologists, the real world experiences of men and boys, reality, none of these will change your view. If you are involved in the provision of services to men and boys, you are a perfect example of why these services fail.

[–]axerlion 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I love how you’re blaming the services without any understanding of what’s involved - I’ve tried to explain this and you’ve ignored it. I’ve addressed your points about the services and the research, and provided my own points and you’ve not acknowledged them. Quite how you think children are impacted by the wording of a press release I have no idea. And your continual reference to the views held by and against men, when we’re talking about a service for children. As for the papers you’ve referenced, again just because one academic has one position does not mean that it is automatically valid and there are not contrasting views - in addition to the fact I’m agreeing with the paper that men being told their issues are down to their gender will cause disagreement. Unless you can suggest a way that the services are against boys, and children have a way of perceiving this, it’s inconceivable that it’s the fault of the service providers.

To put it this way: if someone else were to find out that an individual spoke to Childline - I think girls would be less bothered about other people knowing they have had counselling.

Pardon my cynicism...

This won't be used for it's stated purpose. This will be used, almost exclusively, to prosecute the boys who mistakenly think it's there to help them. Just like the mensline I read about in Australia, where they blame the man for everything they're complaining about.

Yes, fuck off Childline with your "toxic masculinity" crap.

Translation: "We say we care about boys, but don't forget lads, you are all sickos with your 'toxic masculinity'".

Indeed their implicit agenda could be to measure categorize and identify young men drifting into red pill awarenessans mistaking them for the Nice Guy SIMPs and INCELs...

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

It’s true lmao. Toxic masculinity is the reason that guys don’t think they can talk openly about their emotions cause if one guy sees another cry they start to make fun of him for not being strong and manly enough

[–]TheEthnicityOfASpoon 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

Such behaviour is not “toxic“. It’s normal masculine behaviour, that has developed for evolutionary reasons.

Women spend half the lives pouring out their “troubles” to other women. They can natter on for hours. And yet women have a much higher rate of depression and mental issues than men do. All this “talking”, doesn’t do them much good does it?

Men need to understand their place in the world, and they need to study philosophy and human behaviour. And they need to work out regularly in the gym, and have a purpose to their lives. And yes, occasionally, it might help them to talk to someone in a limited fashion.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

So why do you hate women? If it’s men like you enforcing these issues on other men

[–]TheEthnicityOfASpoon 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

There you go... natter, natter, natter.

See? 🤡🔫

Apparently the "female" U.S. Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson says only a "biologist" can do that.

Men and women aren’t as different as you think. Men literally die more from suicide then women do. Besides no woman wants to be with a man who’s emotionally unavailable and resorts to anger every time as a result.

[–]TheEthnicityOfASpoon 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

LOL. Like I (a man) am going to listen to what you (a women) tell me what women look for in a man. 🤪

"Logic" LOL. If you want to catch a fish, do you ask a fish or a fisherman?

Sorry — "fisher-person". 🤪

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you think I (a woman) don’t know what I look for in men? And that all women are somehow inexplicably the same?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh good heavens trust me men tell us women enough what we should look like say and do. I’m just letting you know how it feels 🥰
