The US-based Southern Poverty Law Center and Tulchin Research conducted a poll of 1,500 Americans in late April. It covers a range of topics, which SPLC label "extremist beliefs and narratives," including the views of men on how men are seen in society:

Across the political spectrum, men under 50 are in even greater agreement that “men should be respected and valued more in our society” — a belief held by 65% of younger Republican men and 60% of younger men who are Democrats.

Putting aside the authors' terrible bias, this finding is surprising because of the relatively bipartisan support in the hyper-partisan US.

The article was also picked today up by popular indie media channel Breaking Points, with co-host and long-time progressive feminist Krystal Ball leading the charge, including delivering this questioning critique of the kind of feminism championed by Hillary Clinton and her followers:

"Why should young men embrace an analysis, the most hollow version of which has nothing to say about their condition? In the absence of a political project to recognize the dignity and humanity of everyone, men are left struggling with the same crisis of meaning as everyone else, but frequently without the compassion that society may have for other demographic groups."

Interested in if the sub feels this is localized or a growing feeling? If the latter, what are the primary drivers?

The SPLC is an extremist organization with misandrist views. They are known for smearing the men's rights movement by equating us with the rest of the "manosphere" and not distinguishing it from TRP, PUAs, etc.

I'm glad to see Krystal Ball is more critical and sees the need for men to have their issues addressed as well. I do think this is a more widely growing insight.

Don't make such accusations without evidence.

You have already made posts deriding the manosphere in this sub in your anti-red pill posts.

If you want to prove me wrong, YOU start a conversation about the manosphere in this sub, the good and bad, and maintain a good faith dialogue.

You misunderstand (or we are communicating past each other). We don't want to be equated with other movements grouped under that umbrella. We are a separate entity. We are different from other groups, which have totally different goals, often at cross-purposes from ours. We distance ourselves from the inegalitarian values, and the often rampant misogyny in those other movements.

We distance ourselves from the inegalitarian values, and the often rampant misogyny in those other movements.

This is what I meant by 'assume homogeneity'. Dr. Jordan Peterson is not the same as Dr. T. Hassan Johnson, despite both being 'manosphere'. It is only in progressive circles in which the manosphere is treated like a monolith, where white nationalists pundits are considered the same as ADOS/FAB black consciousness community because they both promote a masculinist point of view.

[–]a-man-from-earthleft-wing male advocate 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

My point is that manosphere is not a useful label because it is applied to such disparate groups. And no, I would not consider Jordan Peterson to be manosphere, nor do I think he would. I'm not sure what movement he would even fall under.

You're right that we should not assume homogeneity, and I'm seeing no homogeneity which is why I say it's a useless label in itself, and a dangerous one when applied by the woke to disparate groups who don't even use it as a self-identifier, in an attempt to demonize all of them.

[–]reverbiscrap 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It is no more useless a label than 'left wing', which even in this sub has been disputed because of the sizable breadth of the ideology itself. This is like arguing tankies are, or are not, left wing.

That said, this entire conversation is why I do not reference professors who have created some of the documents referenced in this sub, lest I run afoul of someone's contempt because that professor labels themselves a part of the manosphere, or the black manosphere.

[–]a-man-from-earthleft-wing male advocate 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's one thing when people self-identify as left-wing, another when we're grouped under labels we don't self-identify as.

[–]Banake 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am not even a fan of Peterson and I don't cosider him part of the manosphere.

[–]Banake 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agree, I don't trust the SPLC. I am waiting for the moment they will put 'justiceforJohnnyDepp' as an extremist group.

Considering the question beforehand about people's thoughts on the replacement theory along with the transparent bias, it's not worth to review.

It's funny af though seeing feminists question what's wrong with zero self awareness that feminism has changed which is why feminism amongst older people is supported more because it allowed women to vote etc where as nowadays it's to defeat the dastardly patriarchy with misandrist weirdos.

Let me just say it's quite interesting to look at the "View discussions in other communities" tab. A lot of people have zoomed into the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory.

[–]_reficio_1 points 4 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I ignored that because from every angle it's a toxic topic. I focused on the gender aspect as I thought that might generate some interesting discussion in this sub. Hopefully..

[–]politicsthrowaway230 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, personally I am of the view that racial identity is not something worth maintaining since it defines almost nothing about a person, versus the company they keep and values they have, so it's a nonsense premise in the first place.

It's just interesting to see people have very different takeaways.

It's interesting to see the generational gap wrt feminism, very few older Democrat men thought poorly of feminism. (perhaps because they were alive to see its greatest advances) It is also reassuring to see so many progressive people have favourable views of men as well. (though these are the minority among Democrat women)
