All studies on false rape allegations (especially ones with extreme "findings" like 2% or 90%) have flaws, usually in sample size or methodology, but that doesn't mean their findings aren't useful or insightful, especially when you compare them together. I.e., the flaws usually aren't "fatal" to the study. Yes, the biggest advantage from the Kanin study is that he only counted it as a false allegation when the accuser admitted it, meaning the 41% figure likely represented the floor.

The sample size for the study is low - around 106. That's probably one of it's biggest flaws. Also, to your point, polygraphs are no longer regarded as reliable like they were decades ago by criminal justice/legal professionals, although they are more broadly accepted by the general population. It's also an old study at this point, but there's no reason to suspect that false allegations have decreased. In fact, given the changes to society since the Kanin study, they have almost certainly increased.

For example, accusers are now encouraged to make accusations in a school setting. The Kanin study predates Davis v. Monroe County Bd. of Ed. (which set a lot of the Title IX investigative machinery in motion) by five years. Now, nearly 30 years after the Kanin study, we have a huge Title IX bureaucracy dedicated to making sure as many accusers report as possible - regardless of the credibility of the accusation. We didn't have that at the time of the Kanin study.

Another thing we didn't have at the time of the Kanin study was social media, and a lot of false allegations are made via social networks but not officially reported to the police.

Before this study, Kanin supposedly did a lot of work researching date rape at a time when most people dismissed the term. If true, that also bolsters his credibility.
