Men's mental health suffering in the workplace, survey finds

A new survey from HeadsUpGuys on men's mental health in the workplace has found its way into the Canadian press. Some of the findings include:

A survey by the website HeadsUpGuys found that nearly half of Canadian men score above the threshold for probable major depression.

The survey found one in three participants report thoughts of suicide or self-injury “at least a few times a week” and 55 per cent being lonely, which the report says is a risk factor for suicide.

With the survey focused on men in the workplace, Ogrodniczuk says it points to the need for better support by employers to ensure men’s mental health is addressed properly.

I'd appreciate perspectives on the final point. What does it look like when employers (e.g. managers, HR etc.) support men with mental health needs? Conversely, what do employers need to stop doing to men?

Maybe telling men that that's their sole responsibility to provide for every single person in their home might be kind of a shitty thing to do. It's the kind of pressure that can keep men in jobs that are literally killing them or exploiting them.

Because society tells us that "real men" are willing to suffer for women and children. Even if those women and children aren't your family. Men have to stay with the sinking ship, men's stay behind to fight off the advancing enemies while the women and children run. No matter what the circumstance, our lives are less valuable.

But, somehow, our lives become valuable in a literal monetary sense the second it becomes about bringing in money. Need money for your household? Your man is the most valuable asset. Need to escape from a destructive and genocidal army? Leave them behind, who needs them?

Wow, that's even higher than that old bogus stat on college harassment.

For some reason, I suspect that this internet poll might have somehow gotten a sample that was already somewhat self-selected.
