Is Ayn Rand right about sex: “A man’s sexual choice is the result and the sum of his fundamental convictions. Tell me what a man finds sexually attractive; I will tell you his entire philosophy of life. Show me the woman he sleeps with and I will tell you his valuation of himself."

No.

Well, you need to post the whole Readen conversation, this quote is insufficient without the context

Which man?

[–]denisc9918 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sounds okay for a bygone era.

For the modern world it reads like pure projection.

She died in 1982 how is it relevant today or MensRights?

The trick here is to never think about what Ayn Rand thinks.

Regardless of gendered language...

“A man’s sexual choice is the result and the sum of his fundamental convictions."

Sort of? Like, I might have a fundamental conviction that I'm destined to be with a supermodel, but that wouldn't stop me from getting with a friend who has a mutual sexual desire. There's compromises, and few people follow their fundamental convictions all the time to their extreme ends. Also, what about my fundamental conviction that oregano improves all pizza? Does that come into play? Do I like Italian women because of my convictions about oregano and pizza? (Answer: not particularly).

"Tell me what a man finds sexually attractive; I will tell you his entire philosophy of life."

This sounds patently incorrect and I hope she did a double-blind study because I would love to see those results. I like small-breasted brunettes with a sense of humor, what does that tell you about my philosophy of life compared to if I liked curly redheads with nice feet?

"Show me the woman he sleeps with and I will tell you his valuation of himself."

Besides excluding people who don't have sex, this strikes me as pretty icky. Can you tell the self-esteem of a beautiful person's sex partner compared to that of an average-looking person's? Sounds like she really equates beauty with self-esteem, and that she thinks only beautiful people with high self-esteem should be having sex together.

Like most of Ayn Rand's writing: pretty gross and unfounded when you think about it.

"Regardless of gendered language" of course it's gendered. It's about men. The propaganda is strong with this one.

I would make her brain explode. Because I am bisexual.

Though, I doubt that this is relevant to MRA at all.

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is absurd. Sexuality evolved long before convictions and philosophy. It may be influenced by them, but it is not the result of them.

Is there any kind of research or data to support this argument? Its a subjective statement only. Treat it with the disrespect this kind of statement deserves.

Shaming men is what this sounds like.

Who is ary rand? I heard about her alot in mad men but I could never figure out if she was some political woman, a philosopher, or a shrink or what....

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Idk she's assuming men can have any women they want so it's sort of useless.

[–]Darthwxman 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah... male sexuality from the viewpoint of a woman living in the 1940's. That's all it is.

[–]Darthwxman 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am reading this book right now. I agree with a lot of points, but that one I really dont agree with. Not uncommon for a female author to really miss the mark on male sexuality though.
