It gets worse than this actually, I'm reviewing DV science papers/books atm, one that had a whole chapter dedicated to women who killed their partners in DV situations, in that chapter they say that.

(paraphrasing)

women who stab their partners in their sleep = reactive abuse, or preemptive self defence.

Theres more to it, they paint a good picture of "no other escape" but that picture applies more to men, who have less shelters and police support and such, and I couldn't even imagine anyone claiming a man stabbed his wife in her sleep in "self defence".

This chapter actually has good stuff in it recognizing that sometimes the man is abused. And recognizing some of the difficulties associated with that.

Such as problems with perpetrators programs, where the women's perpetrator programs look at the whole relationship, ask if it's defensive/reactive or just abusive and treats it, the men's courses focus on making them "admit the need for control and power." and making them take responsibility.

They also regognise problems of men not getting help even when it's obviously needed, and give a horrific example of that (involving a man who told paramedics how she broke his collarbone, and who's wife was on police body cam threatening to kill him... The night before she did.)

Then after recognizing all that they get to their conclusion for the chapter about men killed by their female partners,

Please take a moment to guess their recommendation for the best thing we can do to help reduce the number of men getting killed by their wives and girlfriends...

Did you guess?

I'm not lying or even exagurating (I am looking at it through a somewhat MRA and equality lense, but wow, the lense they must be looking at it through has got to have some wild distortions)

(and it's not even the worst study or report I've looked at recently)

u/neighborhoodpainter already responded with what he thinks the "feminist" counters to these stats are (and I already responded to him about how they are even worse than he thinks they are) but I realized I don't have to reach for Domestic Homicide reporting, they already wrote a paper responding to these stats,

They claim:

-some of that is kink/consentual

-(some) doesn't tell us who started it

-(some) lump verbal and physical abuse together

-(some) count throwing a pillow and a glass as the same thing

-and did he get as hurt as she did/he's bigger

And apparently all these things, every possible fault in every study done that shows what they don't want it to, is skewed to make the women look worse, these same problems couldn't possibly be skewing stats in the other direction.

Then this study, that specifically reviewed the (earlier version of) the stats you gave, goes on to "prove" that men are the bad guys. By reviewing a study they did, interviewing men in prison for Domestic violence and their partners.

And then, because men who were convicted of domestic violence, committed more domestic violence than their partners did... (not exclusively just more) Men are more abusive and women need help and men don't.

Then they put their paper (with details of finding their sample in prison) behind a pay wall and wrote a reasonable sounding, acsessable to all, abstract that explained how their research showed: men=abusive, women=victims, other research=flawed, and theirfore keep funding help for women, men don't need any.

Then over 300 (possibly over 800) other studies cited their study! (not sure how many did so to show flaws in it, and how many to repeat their claims.)

Sorry, your stats are good, I just needed to rant about how some bad stats get created and spread to policy makers and the population in general and I'm angry.

That's correct. Look at lifetime victimization rates of domestic violence:

Slightly more than 2 in 5 women (42.0% or 52 million) in the United States reported experiencing any physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

More than 2 in 5 men (42.3% or 49.9 million) in the United States reported experiencing any physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

We also have to understand that these are self-reported rates, where women are more likely to over-report and men more likely to under-report. About 15 years ago, I tried to reach over my girlfriend's head to get a sock from the laundry rack. I was wearing a tight jacket, which restricted my movement and I accidentally brushed the back of her head with my palm.

She went down like a soccer player, shrieking about how I hit her. Despite her theatrics I immediately apologized and told her what happened. Didn't matter. I hit her, apparently. I did it on purpose, apparently. She was a victim of DV and I was a perpetrator. She routinely brought that up until the end of our relationship.

The most ironic thing about that was she routinely hit me before and after that, and our relationship ended because she literally stabbed me. I didn't even recognize it as abusive until the stabbing.

When I told this story to a feminist, she told me that my girlfriend must have felt threatened, by the way. Feminists are pro-DV as long as the victim is male.
