Back then it was believed that ADHD predominantly affected boys, whereas girls were rarely diagnosed. Prescribing Ritalin was very much the go-to treatment and in many schools most of the boys were drugged up on Ritalin, a lot of them probably ended up becoming coke-heads as a result.

Nowadays boys are still more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls due to underlying biases, but the consensus does seem to be shifting.
