This book sounds stupid, but what's with liberal-as-derogatory term? This might not be the right place to ask this question: but are men's rights fundamentally NOT coming from a tradition of liberalism? or at very least humanism?

Speaking as another moderate liberal, your mistake is equating liberalism with humanism. There's some overlap, but they are not automatically the same thing. There's some overlap between humanism and libertarianism too, but you don't see people automatically equating libertarianism with liberalism or humanism.

Also, confusing intent/idealism vs reality/realpolitik. The ideal is equal opportunity. The reality is that often the parties/groups representing liberalism take advantage of populism to maintain power. Some group usually ends up being the scapegoat for a lot of society's problems. In this case, "privileged groups" like men. The reality is what a lot of people dislike.

The term "liberal", like many other terms in our lexicon that were entirely positive in the past, has taken on multiple meanings, many of them self-contradictory. In any area where public appearance and opinion is important people want to associate themselves and their ideas with positive words. No where is public opinion more important than in a system where public opinion dictates who gains political power.

Before it became associated with Bush's tremendous education-oriented flop, the phrase format "No x left behind" was entirely positive. This is even more true when x = children. Who would want to leave behind a poor defenseless child? :(

The word "Liberal" originally meant "of or dealing with freedom, or those who are free", as it still does mean when we speak of "a liberal education", at least aside from wry humor and the misinformed.

However, now it has become associated by many with those who want to mandate "rights" and "freedoms" for some poor benighted group X (think of the children!) by imposing new rules and regulations on others. It's been associated with people who want to make us less free to determine what we spend, and how we spend it, in order to take more of the money we earn in order to spend it themselves.

People who call themselves "liberal" might be socialists, they might be classical liberals who want you to be able to spend your money the way you want (and often call themselves libertarians as well). They might want to restrict you from offending others with your language, or they might want you to be free to speak offensively. They might want to make you "free" from nasty nasty marriage, or they might want to make you free to enter into a life-long contract of your own free will, and need to stick to that decision once you've made it in full liberty.

And of course most folks think that everyone else knows what they mean when they say "liberal", and think that anyone else trying to use a different definition is dishonest, stupid or at best missinformed... and some folks (politicians, mostly) play on this confusion.

When used derogatorily, the word "liberal" means either "freely spending other peoples money", or "of or dealing with those who impose restrictions"... and yaknow, enough people who called themselves liberal made that their platform... that they're not exactly wrong.

I could do a similar write up on the word "conservative", but that's not the word you asked about.

what's with liberal-as-derogatory term?

IMO this relates back to the fact that there are basically two spheres of the MRM, both of who seem only vaguely aware of each other: the egalitarian side (IE this sub), and the patriarchal side (IE the Spearhead). The egalitarian side is more leftist/socialist, the patriarchal side is more conservative/libertarian (although distinctively NOT "traditionally" conservative, IE Fox News/Republican Party). This is not an absolute, meaning that there are egalitarian MRA's who are hardcore libertarians, but just a general observation of mine.

Regarding liberal as derogatory term: Even liberals themselves do not want to be associated with this. I read in Howard Zinn's "A People's History" that back in the day, leftists/socialists were hardass working men: lumberjacks, coal miners, teamsters, etc. The true muscle of society. Nowadays, they are a bunch of academic elitist, sheltered pussies who have experienced so little hardship that "offensive" language seems incredibly important. They have a sense of entitlement Queen Cersei would balk at, and are absolutely convinced that they are making the world a better place by policing people's thoughts and opinions.

Liberals hate men. You might want to deny that, but it's obviously true.

I know that reddit is full of liberals who will never, ever, ever allow a bad thing (even if true) to be said about liberalism or the American Democratic party, but that doesn't change which way the world turns or in what direction the sun sets.

I'm not very conservative, but I hate liberals because liberals hate me. They hate everyone who is not feminist. They hate everyone who isn't a social justice warrior. They hate everything but the people they should hate, because the people they should hate have too much money and power, and your average 'liberal' is a chick-shit little pussy who cares more about people saying he's a good guy than actually being one.

It's not like there are only two political beliefs in all of existence, both of them conveniently capitalistic and elitist. There are dozens of different ideologies that have nothing to do with economic deregulation at all.

Read the last few executive orders and weep then, obamaite.

I don't like Obama at all. I also don't like people saying that bad person X is worse than an established extremely bad person Y without backing it up, especially when there are multiple peoples who were slaughtered wholesale as a part of the actions of Y.

I'd likewise object if you said that one of the recent mass shooters was worse than Mao without backing it up.

Oh, and shove your implied threats.

What implied threat?

There is a mark past which behavior is rude. Saying that something or someone is worse than Hitler has passed the mark unless you can back it up, which I am open to. If you have specifics to back your statement up, then I'd like to hear them, because that is important info.

If not, then I think your behavior is poor in this instance, and as such you should apologize for your poor behavior.
