Well if the woman is breastfeeding, the baby needs its mother more than it's father. But I guess she's going to have to pump anyway, because 30 days isn't much. Also, while women aren't disabled after giving birth, they typically require 6 weeks to fully recover. At least they have paternity leave though, that's a step in the right direction.

In the UK it is different.

Maternity Leave is up to 52 weeks.

Paid for 39 weeks

is paid for up to 39 weeks. You get:

90% of your average weekly earnings for the first 6 weeks £136.78 for the next 33 weeks

Paternity:

When you take time off because your partner’s having a baby or adopting a child you might be eligible for:

1 or 2 weeks paid Ordinary Paternity Leave up to 26 weeks’ paid Additional Paternity Leave - but only if the mother / co-adopter returns to work

The best way to get equality would be to give man alot more paternity leave. A part of the maternity leave is transferable to the man.

Most couples work togather for the good of the child so having transgferable pay and leave is a good policy.

My company gives no paid maternity or paternity leave, but both sexes get equal unpaid time under FMLA. Women do get up to 8 weeks medical time after giving birth.

The excuse I can come up with for women getting more leave after childbirth is that it does take the body time to recover and encourages breastfeeding (although 30 days is still practically nothing). I'm a huge fan of having "parental leave" for both parents to use as they see fit though. If the mom is breastfeeding, then she is physically more important to the baby for the first few months (yes, she can pump, but dear God I tell you it is a pain in the boob and does not encourage women to continue breastfeeding). After 4-6 months, a baby may prefer its nursing mom but can begin to get nourishment in other places and creates a more even playing ground between parents.

In Canada a woman gets up to 14 weeks of maternity leave that can start as early as 6 weeks prior to the due date and extend up to 8 weeks post birth. Under special circumstances that can be extended under disability statutes if ordered by a doctor.

After the maternity leave, parental leave kicks in which is 36 weeks. This time can be used by either the father or the mother or both but the total number of weeks cannot exceed 36. Unemployment insurance pays during this time at 55% of income (calculated by averaging the last 6 weeks of employment income prior to taking leave). In my old job, when a guy was going on Pat leave, he would work massive overtime (20+ hours a week extra) to pad his paycheck for the weeks before leaving and then pull in a decent Unemployment wage.

So basically, a woman is eligible for up to 52 total weeks of maternity leave and a man is eligible for up to 36 weeks of paternity leave maximum.
