The rape law is not gender neutral in India - only man can be charged with rape. Same with domestic violence law.

India has it really shit right now they have an epidemic of violent rapes and yet the laws in place to counter them keep being used for frivolous and selfish accusations like this one. It's literally a worst of both worlds situation, the Indian authorities need to crack down on these baseless cases because they will do even more damage then they would do here.

I don't think this is particularly archaic. Sure it sucks that the law is not gender neutral, but he slept with her under the assumption that they would get married. Fraudulent inducement can overcome consent.

The problem with this case is that he did intend to marry her at the time. But due to social and family pressure was unable to complete the marriage. That's not rape.
