I've made it a habit in reciprocating with a "thanks for paying your taxes!".

In all seriousness though, sometimes it's a bit tiring to be accosted with patriotic fervor, especially to those of us who've lost people we've known, befriended and worked with. It doesn't do much to thank us for it.

The one thing all us veterans have benefited from over the last couple decades is that we've all had a choice to enlist. In the case of myself as well as many I know however, our socioeconomic status coupled with a sense of needing to live up to our "responsibilities as men" combined with how naive and impressionable we were turning 18/19 years old... what constitutes free choice? Feminists often make the argument that many of their choices are not guided by free will because of gender roles, at least when talking about STEM fields or politics. They tend to conveniently ignore the fact though that women's slated roles in a traditional society aren't likely to get them killed or crippled in order to secure the safety and availability of resources for everyone else.

I would bet heavily that if there was ever a need for a draft again, the MRM/Egalitarians would be the only 'equality' group(s) left in town.

Genderratic and Toy Soldier's blog are probably really my top favourite mens rights blogs.

I like AVFM too, but generally for different reasons.

I don't even know a veteran. But what those soldiers said…they said an entire story in a single sentence. I just started crying.

I don't think I'm the most empathetic, but it felt like the weight of the world right there. Do civilians just not "get" it?

Perhaps she should have gone up to a freed slave and thanked him for working on her land!

He didn't do it out of choice, he did it because he was legally required to, something her or her foremothers never were and never will be. He had no choice!

This is something I don't think women understand (I mean really understand), it's not their fault, they've just always lived with the privilege of never being enslaved.
