I'd guess the dip in the 1940s-1950s would have been the large number of ww2 vets either on their way to war or coming back from. Pretty stark line marching north from that point though.
Is there a version of this going back to the 1700s by any chance? I was given to understand that people in agrarian communities could often marry very young, that teen brides (and grooms) were not at all uncommon.

Well I am curious about the women on that part, their ages went way down as well.
Maybe older ones who worked in the factories did not need to marry when the men returned due to their new found financial independence, leaving mostly younger ones who were not able to save money for the men?
Also not as much of a sudden dip during WWI, though the US wasn't as heavily involved either. And was pretty stagnant for men during Vietnam.

If I had to guess, I'm thinking there were a lot of "high school sweetheart" type marriages. The men going to war were barely out of their teens, it's not surprising that their would-be spouses would be similarly young.
All conjecture of course.

I doubt they had the statistics and census data to support a version going back to the 1700s.

The first censuses counted the population and provided information on population by county.
Apparently they didn't start collecting other data until later, sadly. It wasn't until the 1850s they started to collect social data.
EDIT: I'm going to look into this further, I think. There must be some country that collected such information over a longer period of time which has managed not to lose or destroy those records.

They didn't have the tools to compile those kinds of numbers and statistics. Its pretty much impossible to manage millions of records without computers of some kind. In fact, if you know your census history, IBM was originally founded from a couple separate companies to tally census information.

I'm not sure this is true, since the graph indicates that in 2010, half of the men getting married were over 28 and a half.

While the median age is indeed near 30 but it doesnt account how many men are getting married.
