In most US states (maybe all), you can file a motion for a recalculation of CS if there has been a substantial change in circumstances. That means that if, 1) you income decreases due to no fault of your own, or 2) the custodial parent's income has increased (in income share states, which is slightly more than half), or 3) the custodial parent is living with a partner who is sharing expenses (aka living as married), or 4) the custodial parent remarried, etc. However, the flip side is that the custodial parent can also motion for recalculation if there was a change in circumstances in the other direction.

Each party can file one of these every 2 years.

Still sounds complicated and unfair. The bank isn't going to reduce your mortgage by 35% just because you only see your child every other weekend, and you still need a house big enough for everyone to live in. You still pay full price for a car and gas and insurance, and utilities and food and medical insurance and everything else you have to buy, just like the custodial parent does.

Now think about what happens if you get a new wife and she has kids with her full time that you effectively become the father to? What if you remarry and start a new family? Do those children deserve support?

Clearly, child support is an awful arrangement, and the best solution is to just eliminate it.
