I think that I'd have a very hard time getting a job as a nanny. I think I'd have a very hard time entering into the daycare business. I once approached the head of the primary education studies department at my university about entering into the primary education teacher's program. She urged me to pursue a degree in secondary education because I was a male and would find it next to impossible to find a job as a primary school teacher (I wonder how many other male students she discouraged during her tenure?). I pointed out that I had read that there was a great demand for male primary school teachers (due to their scarcity, presumably because of lower pay). She kind of smiled and gave me the contact information of the head of the secondary school education department. End of meeting. That's the day I came to understand that women were not the exclusive victims of gender discrimination in the "hiring process". It's a shame, I think I would have made one hell of a good elementary school teacher.

There is hiring discrimination, and for a variety of reasons. It also is very field-specific, even inside of academia. Both of the studies conducted directly on hiring discrimination in those two links - the second contains a lot of other supporting studies on related topics - are dealing with psychology departments.

You notice it doesn't study the hiring habits of departments in the physical sciences or mathematics, where there's a shortage of female faculty? Women represent just under half of all psychology faculty:

Given the sharp growth in female faculty, women are probably being hired at a higher rate than men; and the applicant pool is majority-female. Favoring male applicants when women make up the overwhelming majority of applicants and a majority of hires is explicable as affirmative action - just like female applicants being favored in mathematics.

For some jobs, hiring discrimination strongly favors women. Sometimes very blatantly so; there have even been a few lawsuits:

Of course there's discrimination in the hiring process. Hiring is literally discrimination by its very nature - the only thing is that there are laws about the criteria you're supposed to be able to discriminate over.

If you're male, good luck getting any job working with children.

If you're female, good luck getting any job where your physical fitness or aggressive competitiveness is paramount.
