This article makes it sound like an 11 year old boy could possibly have the agency to consent and take part in this. They minimized the woman's role, using terminology such as "taking part in" when she really forced via alcohol and grooming. They also had no use of the terms 'abuse' 'rape' or 'take advantage'. Very frustrating. Sounded like a 'odd stories' article rather than a sexual crime article.

New Zealander here, I remember when I was about 12, and I went to my friend's house. Some people in her neighbourhood had posted flyers around the place, basically telling people to stay away from one of my friend's neighbours because this woman (who was about 40) had been having sex with 13 and 14 year old boys. This was before the law was changed so the woman was never prosecuted. It always stuck me as very weird because as a 12 year old girl I just assumed that adults having sex with children was rape, but apparently not according to NZ law. It's sick that our law would not protect these children, and I bet most of those boys are going to be messed up for a very long time.

Notice the language at play here, as it always is and the chauvinism which guides journalistic ethics these days.

A 36 year old man "rapes" an 11 year old girl; a 36 year old woman "has a sexual encounter with" an 11 year old boy.

A male teacher "seduces and corrupts" a female student; a female teacher "has an affair with" a male student.

It wasn't that long ago that Sydney was up in arms because Sheik Hilaly compared female rape victims to "uncovered meat" based on how they dressed. However these sexist double-standards are highly telling of something far more disturbing. What we in society do to men and boys, is arbitrarily regard them as "uncovered meat" based on the fact that they have a penis.

It documents countless cases of boys as young as 12, who much like this boy, were statutorily raped and the rapist fell pregnant and gave birth. However possibly unlike this boy (it will depend on how the family court intervenes) the children mentioned were court ordered to pay child support to the child sex predator who statutorily raped them.

The fact is that in our society we rail against the notion of relegating women to the bedroom and kitchen and paternalising them as human incubators whose reproductive capabilities must be unquestioningly protected at all costs.

However at the same time, when it comes to the politics of sexual violence, we still view life and the world through that very same lens. We regard vaginas as being incapable of being used as tools of abuse - to the point where the existence of female pedophiles is one of the last social taboos - and as being perpetually harmless.

Conversely because men and boys have only ever been valued in society based on their ability to provide, ability to protect and sexual prowess, men and even underage boys are viewed as always wanting sex - to the point where society has long regarded this type of incident as a rite of passage.

Feminism takes this even further. Under "patriarchal theory", feminist would argue that the child in this instance, raped the pedophile. After all, under feminist theory, in a "patriarchal" society, women are regarded as being incapable of truly giving consent, therefore all heterosexual intercourse is regarded as a form of rape.

So there you have it for anyone shaking their heads at the double standard. The reason for said double standard is quite simple. The traditionalists and masculinists view this type of pedophilia as a rite of passage, whilst feminism views the pedophile in this case as the innocent victim and the child in this case as the rapist.

Someday, maybe we'll start viewing women as adults equally capable of good and evil and accountable for their actions and start viewing men as actualy human beings worthy of compassion instead of disposable and expendable slaves who exist solely to protect and provide for women. Maybe....

Because as OP says, the current laws regarding rape in NZ focuses exclusively on penetration. Must only be in relation to child exploitation?

I think it's important that mothers sit down with their daughters and teach them to reject this toxic femininity that permeates female thinking. You aren't defined as a woman by how many boys you rape ladies. And if you think one of your female friends won't be able to control her sick womanly urges it's up to you to stop her.
