Nowhere did i say she should brain the idiot with a tire iron, but a smack in the chops is, as far as I'm concerned, is fair and good.

And as far as I'm concerned beating the shit out of people like you is a perfectly fair act of self defence, but my opinion isn't the absolute denominator and assault is still wrong even if you're annoyed. (slightly less wrong but still wrong.)

With all due respect, good for your friends that they know better than to put themselves into dangerous situations, but some people aren't afforded that luxury. I've stayed in areas where I would get verbally harassed every time I would leave the apartment. Sometimes it was harmless, just annoying (like being told I would be prettier if I smiled). Other times guys would follow me down the street and scream at me. Not only did I feel unsafe in those situations, but I felt powerless and humiliated, and that's why they did it.

Street harassment isn't about compliments, it's about intimidation and humiliation, and it is incredibly common, no matter how well you "handle yourself". While I agree that some of the responses in this article might seem a bit extreme, it's nice to have responses other than looking at the ground and walking faster.

In the instance I mentioned, I was staying with a friend for a few weeks. It wasn't even a bad area though, just the sort of place that lots of people walked through every day.

But lots of people get stuck in neighborhoods like that (or much worse) because they can't afford to move, or they don't realize it's such a prevalent problem before they sign a lease. It's the sort of thing that you don't really think will be a huge deal (I'm talking about street harassment here, not sexual assaults or rapes); you think "oh, ok, there isn't really all that much crime here, I shouldn't have any problems living here." But eventually, hearing stuff like that every day, it just really gets to you. And I'm not talking about compliments like "Hey, those are nice shoes" or "Your hair looks nice", I'm talking about people saying what they would do to you as you walk past them, or yelling at you from across the street.

I never felt unsafe in that neighborhood, but there were still times when I was afraid to leave the house.

I think alot of MRAs would agree with you, esp on that last part (male self control).

However, people are animals first of all, not rational actors. This is my personal view, not representative of MR. Women need to understand that men, and some men more than others, have super intense biological impulses, and these are not to rape btw, but to be turned on by women. Men do control this. Cat calls are just an expresion of this in what are the most agressive cases. And this is not rape or assualt. Most times it is actually a man's form of sending affection and compliments, however rude, clumsy, or inappropriate.

My point here is to be descriptive. Think of a nature doc on humans. This is not a cultural issue where men can be "taught". It is biological.

Complaining about it is fine. Ignoring it is the best. If you dont feel safe, carry mace and dont go in those places. Always keep an arms length or more apart.

It is what it is.
