this seems like a huge missed shot. jordan peterson is not talking about what should be, he is pointing out the underlying reasons and base psycology of people. he is also pointing out what is wrong with the postmodernists.

this is very much in line with evolutionary psychology

Doesn't matter. You can't fix it. Any attempt to fix it ends up making it worse. Samson Looms.

Interesting. I'll keep that in mind when I watch Peterson from now on.

With that brief description of archetypes I come back to the question of what Jordan Peterson wants to replace postmodernism with.

The answer to that is not an archetype. He wants to replace postmodernism with truth, with logic, with honest speech and dialogue, with freedom of speech. With the Logos, if you know what that is. With speaking truth to power.

The answer to that appears to be no, he has a much more simplistic prescription to fill the void: that men become heroes and women become mothers.

In the words of wikipedia, citation needed. Where does he state this? I haven't got into his archetypal stuff, but I've watched hours upon hours of his videos, and this doesn't sound like him at all. I don't think he'd support something so simplistic as "one archetype for men, and one archetype for women; nothing is subtle, everything is simple, and make sure to follow them slavishly and unthinkingly".

He is caught by the spell of what Jungians refer to as the Great Mother Archetype, and doesn’t realize that he’s caught.

This I just don't believe. I don't know much about Jungian psychology, or even that much about what Peterson's opinions are on it, but the idea that he'd get caught in a trap that's so common that the Jungians have a specific name for it without noticing just isn't plausible.

I am no Peterson fanboi - he shoots from the hip too much for me (judging by his youtube videos that is - I have never attended one of his classes, but then I'd bet neither have you).

That said, he talks about archetypes a lot, and the Mother archetype is but one of them. So while your AVfM article might be some sort of precis of his talks on motherhood, it is selective and thus is no basis on which to label him gynocentrist.

Note: I am not saying he is or isn't gynocentrist, just that your piece is too thin to justify the tag.

In a way you seem to make it about gynocentrism when it doesn't have to be. I can't remember anything from Dr. Peterson where he states that those hierarchies have to be determined by the approval of a woman. Sure there is a link between his success and her attraction, no one denies that. It doesn't have to however be the be all end all.

If we take you by your word you're saying hierarchies are determined by women in every case? Men don't work and build to create something, but to attract women? I totally grant you some correlation on that, but causation would be too far fetched in my eyes. Please elaborate on that.

What I gathered from Peterson is mostly that men are having a shitty time nowadays in general because they are deprived of the meaning that comes with voluntarily accepted responsibility. It comes from the thought of self-improvement to become a better human being and not to slave yourself to a woman.

Doesn't matter. They're the gatekeepers of societal approval and thus hierarchical approval until society burns down and nothing is left. Samson Looms.

Well, it does matter if you try to paint the picture that Dr. Peterson deliberately propagates gynocentrism. And again you're being overly simplistic...

But thanks for answering.

He is.

This is pretty badly written and fails to make a convincing argument.

I rate this article 2/10, it hardly seems relevant and mostly seems to be ripped off one book.

Lmao, one small quote, the rest is mine. :-)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not what I meant.

First off, you have one source (and two internet links, no footnotes)...this shit wouldn't fly in a first year university class.

Second, you talk about Peterson but provide no actual examples of what you claim he is about.

Third, the article itself is pointless (it comes across as pseudo-intellectual bullshit/mental masturbation where the author(you) shows off the book he read that weekend) what utility does it have? How does this help men or raise awareness?

[–]PeterWrightMGTOW[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Meh, anyone who knows Peterson and his work is familiar with his advocacy of motherhood.

A generous list of sources for Peterson's views are added at the bottom of the article. If you take time to examine them you'll see the point of the article.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

anyone who knows Peterson and is work is familiar with his advocacy of motherhood.

Therein lies another flaw of the article, you make the assumption everyone knows who Peterson is, even in post-grad classes you don't make that assumption.

Abetter article would have included some information on Peterson and his views.
