Masculinity is just a daft stereotype. It doesn't mean anything to be a 'man'. What does it add up to apart from advertising that you are Not Woman.

Thousands of dads are left in shock as DIY paternity tests soar. Up to 30,000 tests are being performed every year, says Alphabiolabs. In the UK about 750,000 babies are born every year. Feminists want the test to be illegal without the written consent of the mother.

In the same way, masculinity is fundamentally empty. Not men, you understand: I mean the performance of being a man.

Tell that to women.

Look, I don’t think anyone would be better off if men constantly burst into tears. If your mate tells you he’s terminally ill, the last thing he wants is you blubbing all over him.

Aw, so there is at least one thing positive about masculinity, according to the author himself: maintaining some degree of stoicism in the face of adversity.

The truth of course is that masculinity is beautiful. It is one of the most beautiful things in creation. It is the men who stormed the beaches at Normandy to defeat fascism. It is the men who flew to the moon. It is the men who created philosophy and art and literature and the computer you're reading this on. It is a father and son going on their first fishing trip. It is sacrificing oneself for the greater good of humanity.

There are beautiful things about femininity too, or at least there used to be: being supportive, nurturing, caring, empathetic. Now we have Lena Dunham and Amy Schumer and "sassy" bitches who "don't need no man" except to keep the electricity on and the toilet flushing and a roof over their heads.

I understand the MGTOW position: that it is no longer honorable to sacrifice oneself for this society. That masculine energies are better devoted to something else. But the author's position is daft.

The feminist claim that masculinity is "toxic" is born of out envy. There are no feminists in the foxholes, and during a natural disaster when strength and bravery are required masculinity suddenly becomes not so toxic after all.

STFU with this masculine energies bullshit, thats religious thinking and it is on par with the "DIVINE FEMININE" new age bullshit. i find it mind boggling that some MRAs continue admiring the stoicism thing in men. EVERYONE should own their shit, not just men!

[–]Demonspawn 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The reason he thinks the way he does is because his society has destroyed masculinity to the point where the only part of it that remains is "not female".

And that's why is society is going to collapse.

A woman will say Masculinity means nothing until she wants something from a man at which point we're told it's everything.

What does it add up to apart from advertising that you are Not Woman: not walking like this or talking like that?

That you are aggressive, brave, stoic, steadfast, strong, that you refrain from violence due to your self-discipline but are able to be unflinchingly violent if the situation required it, that you protect the ones you love, that you afford special consideration to women and children--we can object, but that's a dimension of masculinity in our culture that we're held to whether we like it or not--that you can both lead and follow effectively, that you are competitive...should I keep going?

It seems to me that the attributes we associate with masculinity fall into two groups: there’s the stuff that we wrongly think is exclusive to men,

Try: stuff that we rightly understand to be more common among men than women.

Into the first category we can put courage, stoicism and a competence in traditional manly tasks. That’s great but having seen the way my wife gives birth and wields a Bosch Hammer Drill, I beg to differ.

I love how this isn't an indication to him that his wife is masculine. No, no no! This is an indication that every masculine trait his wife possesses is not a masculine trait because his wife possesses it.

Have you ever seen a straight guy sit on the floor? He might kneel or he might sit cross-legged like he did when he was a schoolboy. What he won’t do is support himself with a hand on the ground and his legs folded to one side. That’s how girls sit, probably because it’s convenient if you happen to be wearing a skirt. (Top tip: don’t go to a music festival with a Scotsman who doesn’t wear a kilt very often.)

Not sure what he means. Does anyone else get the impression that one time, at band camp, his friend wore a kilt and sat like a girl? Or is this meant to explain that his friend flashed his wang at someone by mistake? If it's the former, I guess that must mean sitting with your legs to one side and your hands on the ground is no longer a feminine trait...right?

Everything is usually about something. It’s inconvenient because figuring out what that something is takes work. A masculinity which includes being good at that work might be one worth preserving.

Oh, totally. Not like our current masculinity, which includes being good at building roads and houses and shit. No, we need to learn to do the real valuable work! Externalizing our feelings!

Men and women are different of course, but only when we’re naked. The rest is advertising.

We're literally different at the cellular level. No matter how you want to advertise it, gender is informed by sex.

This guy has drunk the kool-aid. He's missing the links between why men are how they are and the various reasons behind it. Mostly, it's to get women.

According to the dictionary it means

"having qualities or appearance traditionally associated with men, especially strength and aggressiveness"

it is well known that men are physically stronger than women because biology - testosterone etc

so, no it's not daft, it's based on real world observation about traits common among men. traits which differ from traits common among women.

The tradcons in the movement are becoming very annoying. The article is bullshit too.
