Review of the new Ghostbusters: "In the original, the bad guys weren’t actually the ghosts; the bad guys were the gov't bureaucrats, who set off a supernatural crisis through bumbling. In this film, by contrast, the enemy is all men. Every man in the movie is a combination of malevolent & moronic."

The video of a small child crying as she is being "taken from her mother" is a complete falsification. The child and mother have remained together the entire time. However the mother did take the child away from Honduras without the father's approval, and the father never even got to say goodbye.

A truly powerful male in a movie has flaws. Flaws you can relate to and that makes that male believable in some way.

A truly powerful female in a lot of movies, have no flaws. She's as strong as the powerful guy she fights with (or stronger), is thin, lithe, smart, funny, knows everything, etc. The amount of Mary Sues is absurd when it comes to powerful women depicted on screen. Even in TV shows. Quirky girls that are sociably awkward still easily navigate social gatherings. A lot of directors are afraid of making that woman weak in any area. I liked Star Wars episode 7, mainly cuz I just like star wars, but good god was Rei the biggest Mary Sue ever. She's not relatable at all. Never flew a star ship. Flies the Millinium Falcon better than Han. Never used the force. Uses the fuck out the force, every try. Never used a lightsaber. LOL look at me fuck up this powerful Sith!! HAHAHA so easy!

Sherlock is an ass, and gets along with almost no-one accept Watson. Bruce Banner has that weird habit of turning into a huge dude that destroys everything. Tony Stark is narcissistic and hubris kicks his ass all the time. You can continue with just about any male hero, or even, any male villain. Most female heroes/villains just don't have those flaws, and it makes them and their stories boring.

Wonder Woman is a decent film but it isn't groundbreaking in any way. I think she's more of a lesbian fantasy object rather than a role model for a strong woman (seriously, how can any superhero be a role model unless you aspire to throw cars over buildings).

Cameron is currently at work on the four sequels to 2009’s Avatar, with shooting expected to begin in September.

Ugh.

Avatar was a massive SJW wankfest, four sequels will be more cancer than Hollywood has ever seen.

Avatar was a massive SJW wankfest

I couldn't go past the first twenty minutes so have no idea what its politics were. The FX were terrible, the characters tired stereotypes, and the aliens grotesque -- and that's coming from a man whose favorite color is blue!

[–]EricAllonde 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Oh fark, where would I start?

The noble natives are living in perfect harmony with nature, until the arrival of (mostly male) macho, highly militaristic colonists from earth, intent on raping the land for a rare mineral. Our hero connects with the natives, falls for a native girl and comes to embrace the wisdom of the natives' way of living. Rejecting his patriarchal, colonialist culture, he decides to switch sides and fight with the natives to help them resist the invasion from earth. He's assisted by the female scientist who empathises with the natives even before he does (because she's less under the thrall of patriarchy, I presume), and she's further shown to be virtuous by her noble self-sacrifice at a key point in the plot.

Eventually the evil invaders are vanquished and sent packing. The natives show no interest at all in human technology and instead resume their idyllic lifestyle, communing with nature.

Yes, it really was that bad. In fact, I think I've mostly failed to capture the true awfulness of the movie in this comment.

[–]wiseprogressivethink[S] 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It was "Dances With Smurfs" with $100 million in CGI.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sounds like a barrel of laughs. The natives' rejection of technology is especially funny given that the movie would be impossible without all this nasty technology!

[–]Jackoffalltrades89 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And don't forget that it's not remotely original either. It wasn't nicknamed "Ferngully 2: Dancing with Pocahontas" for nothing.

"His praise of my film Monster, and our portrayal of a strong yet damaged woman was so appreciated."

Wournos was strong yet damaged. You know, like Ted Bundy. You know you live in a quasi-matriarchy when scum gets respect just for being female.

As for Cameron, he's just another feminist pussy and apart from the original Terminator movie he has done nothing that wasn't just a load of great FX mixed in with third rate drama.

[–]rollypolymasta 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I always thought the film Monster must be really insulting to the victims of Wournos. Not only is she portrayed as a sympathetic character, but her victims are all rapists and creeps. I think it's really well made and acted, but as you say you'd never get a male serial killer presented in that fashion.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I can name several movies where male murderers/rapists based on real people are portrayed sympathetically.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (they may not have killed anyone personally but their gang did)

Sanford Clark from Changeling

Norman Bates (based on Ed Gein)

Clyde Burrow (along with Bonnie)

There's another movie about two gay men who murdered a little boy but I can't think of what it was called right now. Used to play on Logo.

Movies have to make their characters somewhat sympathetic to appeal to an audience, even killers. If you ask me, the only one who actually was sympathetic was Sanford Clark.

[–]rollypolymasta 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

As you say Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid didn't kill someone personally let alone where serial killers. Haven't seen the changeling but was Clark a serial killer. Norman Bates is a fictional character so there's no victims to offend, he's very loosely based off Ed Gein (As was Leatherface). Gein is slightly different anyway he was legitly insane and we don't even know if he murdered anyone he was primarily a grave digger so hardly a serial killer. As for Bonnie and Clyde they were criminals but again hardly serial killers.

Do you know of any examples of a real life male serial killer, who is depicted as sympathetic and their victims in a negative light? If this was the case do you not feel the depiction of the serial killer would be criticised heavily, not praised?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Even if these people were not serial killers they still murdered at least one person, which is bad enough. Butch and Sundance still associated with the gang after murders happened so in some jurisdictions they'd be guilty of killing too even if they didn't commit it themselves. Clyde killed a few while robbing banks. Gein did confess to killing two women, so the character of Norman Bates could easily piss off the families of those victims.

Clark murdered dozens of young boys after his cousin tortured them but only under duress and after being tortured himself, so his case really was sympathetic.

I can't think of any victims being portrayed in a negative light though.

It's been awhile since I saw Monster but I don't remember her being praised in it. I remember her being shown as sympathetic and desperate, sure, but not praised. When she was being taken away for her execution she even said something like, "You can't put me to death, I'm a woman!" That just made her seem arrogant

[–]rollypolymasta 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry but Norman Bates similarities to Gein aren't that similar at all. The only similarity is that Gein was attempting to create a woman suit out of corpses (which was probably trying to emulate his mother) and Norman Bates dressed up as his dead mother, that's it. One trait was inspired by a real killer that's really it. I got confused with the debate around whether he murdered his brother of not, with the two women my bad.

I might have to watch Changeling it sounds interesting but it seems like it makes more sense why he would be seen as sympathetic. That's my problem with Monster, Wuornos really isn't that sympathetic she murdered 7 men in the space of a year, sure she had a fucked up childhood (which is oddly not brought up in the film much) but so did nearly every serial killer.

My main crux of my argument is that it's a negative portrayal of the victims which I find pretty sick tbh. These men who had their lives taken also had their names dragged through the mud (with no evidence that these men were rapists). Also the film came out like 10 years after the murders, so immediate family were probably still grieving when they had their lost lover ones names tarred as rapists, in an Oscar winning film that year as well. I don't see someone making a film about Ed Gein where the two victims are made out to be scum.

Again I actually think Monster is a well done film, it just feel that it's slightly morally repugnant.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nice try, but the only serial killer in there is Gein and Norman Bates was hardly portrayed as a strong victim of the matriarchy.

I'll admit, I really liked Titanic, although I was like 16 when I first saw it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Never even tried watching that one. Three hours of DeCaprio and Little Ms Plain is more than my stomach can handle.

[–]wiseprogressivethink[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

DeCaprio

He's a good actor, imo.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps. But he is, nonetheless, still DeCaprio.
