I am facing an impending divorce. I have a nominal hearing coming up soon, and am considering not hiring an attorney to save on costs. My STBXW and I were only married for 4 months before we separated. We have no real marital assets to split, no joint accounts, no property together, and no children, so there really isn't much to argue over. Her demands on the divorce summons aren't extremely outrageous, and while I'm willing to give in to them just to get this over with, i am kind of worried that she might try to demand more out of spite, or that the judge may burn me with alimony payments or giving her part of my pension, despite our short marriage. Hiring an attorney may calm some of my fears of getting screwed over, but I am also in a tight financial spot right now, so its been tough for me to find an affordable one in my area. I am considering just representing myself, considering I don't really want to fight anything and don't want anything from her except for the divorce to be finalized as soon as possible. Is this a bad idea? Has anyone here done this, and if so, how did it go for you? Should I just hire an attorney to make sure my rights aren't violated, or given the circumstances, is it kind of a waste of money?
Also, I live in a no fault state, if that makes a difference... Thanks in advance for your replies!
