I found this video on youtube of a 1979 "debate" between Betty Friedan and Herb Goldberg (an early proto-MRA). Some statements of hers surprised me. She started off by saying:

I agree with every word that herb said

which is huge. Later on she said :

maybe it was necessity

referring to the origin of gender roles - This being the typical MRA position, and contrary to feminist theory. Probably the most important part though, was this:

there was an ideological mistake, the younger women who followed came out of this radical student movement in the 60s, where they had cut their political teeth using the doctrines of class warfare applied to the problems of race [....] and because she has not had a lot of experience of life yet, she applies too literally to her own condition as woman vs man, the ideology of class warfare, or race separatism, which in fact denies the dynamic psychological, human, sexual, social, economic, whatever, the human inter-relatedness, the human interdependence of woman and man. It is our human condition, you can't get away from it. To deny it, to say you know, somehow this is a war of woman against man, it's not the point, I and others today see the women's movement for equality is merely the first step of a very neccessary sex-role revolution.

It's also interesting that she repeatedly refers to a "women's movement for equality", rather than "feminism", which hints that she wasn't hardcore about maintaining that term. One final thing : she characterised a sizeable portion of the housewives she wrote her book about, not as downtrodden servants, buts as (I'm paraphrasing) "stereotypical Jewish mothers, and Jewish mothers who aren't Jewish, who are at their husbands all the time because they have all this energy, but nothing to do with it".
