Well, this movie was her LEARNING to stand up to her shrill, manipulative mother and cold, distant, and eventually abusive fiance.

And she WAS only seventeen, how many of US weren't insufferable at that age? That's just an extra sore spot for me: people apply their adult standards to teenage protagonists all the damn time. Like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix had a lot of fans complaining at how moody and temperamental Harry was: he was FIFTEEN!!!!!!! He wasn't acting like an adult because he WASN'T an adult!

The biggest problem is it was a love story as written by someone who doesn't know to write love stories. James Cameron does ACTION MOVIES best, he really should've brought in a second writer to punch up the Jack and Rose dialogue.

The cinematography and filmgoing experience of the movie of the excellent. Red Letter Media's review of the movie really does a good job of breaking down the good and the bad of the movie.

Quite a while since I've seen the movie. But from what I remember, Rose's mother was forcing her into the marriage with Cal, who she never loved at all. But the mother was afraid of going broke and losing her lifestyle. Sure, Cal is a total asshole. No debate there. But the mother is the real villain. She's basically selling her daughter off to the highest bidder. Rose ultimately does what teenagers do when they feel trapped by their parents and society.....revolt.

I hated that movie.

I saw it in the theater a woman whom I dated for several years and whom I now pretty much can't stand -- who loved the movie.

After watching the movie, this woman went on about how awesome Kate Winslet was, and how she thought DiCaprio was awful.

My opinion was that Winslet was boring and uninspired, there are dozens of actresses who could have played her part and done it just as well or better, and that DiCaprio was more or less the only thing that made that movie at all worth watching, but wait it wasn't. I explained, that there are very few actors who could have played DiCaprio's role as Jack, the hormone-addled total moron willing to throw his life away for some rich entitled female, and done so in a way that was in the least bit believable.

The part of self-obsessed, self-pitying Rose? Could have been played by nearly any reasonably competent actress. In fact, I've seen her character played in literally hundreds of movies.

My explanation elicited frowns.

I guess thinking it's ridiculous to watch a guy drown to death for a dumb reason and call it romantic -- well that makes me unromantic.

Should I care?

As for the woman with whom I watched the movie, I haven't seen or heard from her in years -- thank god for that.

Now that I am older, I think I will show my boys Titanic -- and explain to them how this movie is total crap and how they should avoid any woman who thinks this movie represents anything other than a total nightmare. Save my boys the time that it took me to figure that out for myself -- not about the movie, but how a person's response to it informs you about how you should think of them.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I think it was at least implied that it was an arranged marriage of some kind.
