University of Adelaide resorts to female-only job ad

The university has advertised eight senior positions in the faculty of engineering, computer and mathematical sciences, all at the level of associate professor and lecturer, and all for women only.

The advertisement takes advantage of a “lawful special measure” under section 47 of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1984, which says that certain potentially discriminatory actions are legal if they are intended to “ensure that persons of a particular sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status have equal opportunities with, respectively, all other persons”.

I'm confused, how do woman only positions "ensure that persons of a particular sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status have equal opportunities with, respectively, all other persons”? Seems to be that they violate that directly, it gives women unequal opportunities. But I guess that's never been an issue.

Is this a private university? it does not appear to be the case based on google hits which indicate it to be a "public institution" which is funded by the government , to what degree , I am uncertain.

Point being, government institutions are not the private sector, this should heavily illegal and/or lead to complete defunding of the institution in question.

If it were a private institution, yeah okay hire whoever you want. This is not part of the private sector. Defund the university and/or fire every single person involved in such gross misconduct.
