I think you first need a clear definition of what's a right. In your society people have those options, but they're not natural rights, they're just societal decisions. But maybe for your paper that doesn't matter.

To an extent your professor is right. When people assert contradictory rights, there has to be conflict as not everyone can get what they want.

I would more ask does your professor want a society without conflict? It sounds nice, but by their own logic requires a sacrifice of personal liberty and autonomy which many would argue is not worth it.

With you whole wife/ husband example. Your society may view those things as rights, others wouldn't. The conflict is as much between different views of social arrangement as it is between the wife and husband.

But yes in principle the example stands. If the wife has a right to x but demanding x will negatively impact the husband, she has to consider that demanding x will create conflict. That's not implicitly a bad thing, considering the impact of your actions on another person is a key part of both society and a mutually beneficial relationship.

If your rights infringe on the body of someone else, then enforcement of them becomes a human rights issue. Your society needs to ensure that your rights are rights for you, and not rights against someone else.

I think a discussion on natural rights is in order, but this may negatively impact your grade.

Selfishness isn't a problem as long as everyone has the same opportunity. It's when people are restricted vs others that we need to rely on people's generosity since those with the advantage cannot be kept in check by alternatives.

You seem to be mixing up human rights with the choices people make or local societal norms.

There is no right to war or to capture a country, there is no right to manipulate the law, in fact, all three would be against human rights.

Basic human rights are, the right to be free, the right to equality, the right to believe what you want and think how you want, the right to a fair trial, the right to not be tortured, the right to not be unfairly detained, the right to be innocent until proven guilty, the rights of all to be equal in front of the law, the right to not be discriminated against, the right to life, the right to privacy, the right to never be a slave or to own them, the right to move anywhere in your own country, the right to seek a safe place to live if your country becomes too dangerous and the right to have your rights protected by law.

None of these should cause any conflict in a fair society, it is the unfair societies that will face conflict, as they should.

Agreed. I've been thinking about it a lot lately. I'll speak in favour of the society. We all sacrifice individual rights in exchange for love, care, attention and a lot more. The exact rules vary from person to person, family to family, village to village, country to country.

You have no rights. Nobody has any rights. The laws of physics care nothing for your pitiful human norms. What you have are responsibilities and what you mistakenly believe are your rights are in fact responsibilities that others hold towards you.
