Evidence was presented that five days before Mr Hawtin was almost killed by Mr Bruckner Ms Lines had told her psychologist: "Can't deal with him, custody arrangements. He wants the kids 50 per cent because he can get 50 per cent of the assets and not pay child support."

"This is the trigger," Marie Shaw QC suggested to the jury in her closing address.

"This is the threat to her control of her assets, her control of her business, the control of the house that she's got him locked out of, the control of the accounts that she's closed off," she said.

"If I had died from my injuries, she would have been likely to receive around $800,000 in life insurance, almost double what would be paid to a manual, blue-collar worker," Mr Hawtin said.

So based on the evidence provided and the way the stories read, the ex spouse tried to kill him for the life insurance, going so far as to solicit a woman and another man to kill her ex husband. What's more is that she kidnapped their children while only having 50/50 custody rights, and is now refusing to return with them.

The frightening thing is, that nobody seems to give two shits because it's the mother who took them, while the father has to fight tooth and nail to clear his name after almost being murdered. What a fucked up situation

That is the most fucked up thing I have read in a long time. This would make a blockbuster suspense thriller film. For the sake of the children, I hope this man is reunited with his family and I hope this woman is extradited from China and she and her conspirators are brought to justice.

Surely the investigation team should have done gunshot residue tests on everybody to see who fired the gun. The initial version of events would mean that this guy shot his ex’s lover and then stood there and waited while an injured man moved over three meters toward him, picking up a hatchet on the way, and then turned his back so that the guy could hit him numerous times. It’s just not plausible!
