Alimony is so wrong.

[–]InformalCriticism 31 points32 points33 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While they're at it, they should cap child support at the amount you would get from government assistance to prevent predatory mothers from targeting working men for their bank accounts.

There was a time when alimony made sense. Now is no longer that time. Now it’s just wrong.

Just wanted to comment how brave one has to be to propose something like that in California of all places. But it just shows how much alimony can hurt former husbands. It's used too often as a punitive measure against men then actually caring about the sustenance of separated families/children. And bullies have been abusing it for decades.

Pro tip: if you don't want to pay alimony then don't get married.

You cannot possibly not know that was a potential outcome.

Edit: a couple of you think common law marriage is going to get you.

  1. Common law marriage only exists in a few states. Most states do not recognize CLM. 39 states do not recognize "informal marriages."

  2. The state has requirements that must be met before a CLM could exust. Simply living together is not enough in any state.

  3. She has to prove a CLM exists in court before one exists.

  4. It's far easier for her to negotiate an out of court arrangement with you than it is to prove a CLM exists then divorce.

  5. Claiming CLM is going to get you is the cowards way of justifying their marriage.

Pro tip: if you don't want to pay alimony then don't get married.

Lee Marvin would like to disagree

[–]NibblyPig 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely. Check you don't live somewhere with common law marriage either.

[–]Factushima -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Common law is hard to prove. A little research on what the rules are goes a long way.

[–]McFeely_Smackup -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

common law marriage is not what television and movies leads people to believe.

It's not possible to become accidentally common law married.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I don't watch tv or movies, and I think it is possible to accidentally become common law married.

Could you elaborate a bit on how it is not possible? Because I have this opinion even after doing my own research, so maybe I was looking in the wrong places, but I didn't see anything that seems to agree with what you are saying

[–]McFeely_Smackup -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

common law marriage requires a couple to present themselves as a married couple. sharing a last name, wearing rings, calling the other person your husband/wife...all that kind of thing.

the conventional idea that "if you live together for x years, you're common law married" is not true anywhere in the USA.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I really hope that is true but I dont even know where to begin verifying that

[–]matrixislife -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

anywhere in the USA

Is the relevant point there, these rules are different around the world.

[–]McFeely_Smackup -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Right, but since we are actually talking about the USA here, it's pretty relevant

[–]matrixislife -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The only mention of the USA is the article, and that wasn't about common law marriage.

[–]NohoTwoPointOh 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, because the states CLEARLY lay out the terms and conditions of marriage contracts. /s

On a serious note, this should be law as with any other contract of this magnitude.

[–]Factushima 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The law is right there for the reading. Alimony is codified. No excuses, no complaining.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And that was the day Factushima learned about common-law marriage

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Looks like I am late to the party

[–]Factushima 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm very well aware of common law marriage. You still must consent to commonlaw married.

This was already posted. It's not a gotcha.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wtf is a gotcha? I know now that it was already posted. Hence my comment directly below the one you replied to

[–]McFeely_Smackup 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

this seems like the biggest waste of time I've heard of this week.

it will make zero difference

People who think like this have repeatedly been proven wrong throughout history. Let's just hope you're wrong this time.
