Why are the rights a man has during a pregnancy if the woman doesn’t want the baby?

None until the woman gives birth. There is no legal method to force a woman to have an abortion, or remain pregnant.

At birth the father can petition for custody (if not married).

Sure, the man can try to convince her to complete the pregnancy. Other than that? No, there's nothing in the legal system that can compel a woman to carry to term at the discretion of the male...nor should there be.

The only rights he has as a man is to pay. The courts won’t care as long as he is paying for it.

I read a story not long ago (can’t remember enough to find the link) where this happened. She agreed to give birth and gave up all parental rights. She was still expected to pay child support and she paid 125% of what she owed.

Not much longer the guy realized single parenthood was difficult and he couldn’t do it on his own anymore. He wanted to go to court and was asking about his chances. Most of the legal professionals told him he didn’t have a chance in hell of changing the custody agreement due to their previous agreements and her supplemental child support.

It’s technically possible for this to occur, but it’s generally a bad idea and can be a risky agreement to get into to for both sides.

Zilch. Pretty much the same as when she wants the baby, especially if unmarried, but even married men are one divorce away from never seeing their kids again.
