Despite the well-documented relations between intimate partner violence and suicidal ideation, gender differences regarding the relationships between intimate partner violence types and suicidal ideation are less understood.

In addition, few studies have examined the risk that harassment may confer for suicidal ideation in the context of intimate partner violence. This study examined gender differences in the associations of harassment, emotional, and physical intimate partner violence with suicidal ideation in 502 college students, while controlling for the influence of depressive symptoms.

Results indicated that physical abuse, but not harassment or emotional abuse, was associated with increased suicidal ideation in men. In contrast, emotional abuse, but not physical abuse or harassment, was associated with increased suicidal ideation in women.

Clinicians should consider potential gender differences in the impact of intimate partner violence on suicidal ideation when assessing suicide risk.

Men and boys are usually not even aware they are experiencing abuse, because it is so normalized. If it falls short of violent physical attacks, they don't even realize it is occurring, and even when it exceeds the level of physical attacks against them, they tend to minimize it.

There is another aspect of this that I don't think the researchers examined- women who abuse men and boys often use suicide threats as one of their many tactics, to control their partners' emotions. It comes up when men or boys try to explain their needs or feelings or wishes to the abuser. When the abuser can't silence their partner, they resort to a desperate suicide threat, to direct attention back to their own needs, to sort of override whatever the boyfriend or husband tried to talk about. In theory, men could do the same thing, they just don't.
