De Beauvoir was correct in two ways: you are not born a woman because a woman is an adult female. You are born a baby girl with the potential to mature into a woman. This does not make gender a social construct, but a biological certainty.

The second way is there are societal expectations that a woman must fulfill in order to be considered "a woman" by the rest of society. These were largely so implicit that they didn't need spelling out, and in not spelling them out explicitly, de Beauvoir robs later generations of that knowledge or "female wisdom".

A "woman" would tend to the household, organize servants, shop for groceries, make and mend clothes, and keep harmony in the house and cook or organize the cooking. It was so blindingly obvious to everyone, that she didn't need to spell it out.

By de Beauvoir's reckoning, NO women exist today. They are all adult-girl-children.

De Beauvoir never meant that we could construct our own gender based on a whim.
