Relationships are complex. People change over their life and sometimes they want something different. In the case of your Mom and I, she told me she had been unhappy and no longer wanted to be married. I didn't feel that way. I tried to find out what she wanted, but she was already involved in her new life. Your Mom moved out. Filed for divorce a few months later. I attempted to work with her but she wouldn't answer my calls or texts. The rest is history.

This could have been a mid-life crisis or someone else caught her eye. I don't know kids.

I saved some documents. It will tell the story if my daughter ever wants to know. I dont want it to seem one sided.

I feel she has to know that I tried to hold the family together and it was not my idea.

My daughter is good at hiding her feelings.

Just give a version of your new date briefing story.

We grew apart, it seemed we were going in different directions in life and your mom decided it was time to end the marriage and file. I didn't want it but I understood her choice to end it and in a no fault state I could not stop her if I wanted to.

I also (depending on my mood) well my ex decided to join the French Foreign Legion. I mean it was ok at first because she learned to speak French and made the most amazing Crêpes. I had to put my food down when she insisted wearing her Kepi Blanc ALL THE TIME... even to BED!

I could not abide her choice in head gear in Bed. Combat boots "maybe" not a Kepi Blanc!

The idea is not to paint the ex as bad, or you as pathetic. Saying to someone "it just happened" seems to be good. You can add "I what I learned from the divorce is to be more mindful of emotional needs..." some such feel good statement.
