In the case of girls, the law stipulates that religious practices do not protect from prosecution.

Clearly there is an empathy gap at play. People think mutilation of boys is fine, while same kind of mutilation of girls is unacceptable.

Yeah I remember that. They used the equal protection clause to get rid of FGM. Their argument. If parents can cut their boys for religion, then parents should have equal protections of their rights to cut girls too.

You can thank the feminist for partnering up with the medical community and pedofiles to separate circumcision and FGM in the public mind.

BTW the religious argument makes no sense. The baby is a human and has the human right to their own religion. The parents forcing their religion onto the child through mutilation is a violation of that childs religious freedom. You can raise your child how you want, but you cannot cut your religion into their flesh.

FGM laws in the US are unconstitutional because they don't provide equal protection for both sexes. Technically nothing can stop you from circumcising your daughter, it's just that they aren't any clinics in the US who do this.

Regardless of any of the gender issues at play here, we do not provide unlimited freedom to everyone on the basis of religion to begin with.

For instance, people are required to educate their kids and that education is required to include a reasonable (fsvo reasonable) curriculum, which is to say, in many western countries you can't send your boy to an Islamic madrassa which teaches only aspects of religion, because that wouldn't be a sufficiently rounded experience to count as "education."

On this basis there has been significant controversy in the UK, though not as much controversy as there probably should have been, about religious schooling, which is (regrettably) legal.

Similarly, there have been discussions about parents who hold beliefs which reject modern medicine allowing their children to suffer easily-preventable illnesses, and at what point that becomes illegal neglect.

So this is already an argument we've pretty much had.

To steelman the opposition, it is probably reasonable to say that circumcision is less damaging to men than FGM is to women, but we should not really allow ourselves to be drawn into a conversation about how much genital mutilation is OK. Neither is OK and religion is nothing like a reasonable argument for it.

Jokes aside, any religion or culture that requires anyone to be mutilated at any time for any reason is barbaric, backwards, and can fuck right off back to the Stone Age where it belongs. They can call me whatever kind of bigot they like. I don't care. Barbaric, backwards Stone Age religions and cultures that mutilate people, especially children, deserve nothing but scorn and contempt.
