Sorry for the paywall, but interesting article in light of the recent discussions on Gen Z men and women diverging politically. Also perhaps related to LMWA's recent discussion on what makes it "left wing" and Roe v. Wade/abortion rights. In my opinion, the self-given label "feminist" or "liberal" often means something very specific to educated, urban professionals that does not actually mean the person is feminist or liberal as a whole or even in the context of heterosexual relationships. Instead, it is code for a certain kind of socially acceptable position, sort of like saying you like all music except country.

This isn't only a Gen Z thing, it spans every modern generation. I'm an older millennial and this was something I always made sure to discuss prior to going on the first date with guys, so they knew beforehand I'd absolutely be paying for myself, and him if he wished.

There was a very stark difference between the men who were cool with splitting vs wanting me to pay for it all vs refusing to go on a date with me for wanting to pay.

I think this is something that doesn't get brought up much in such articles/conversations; that there are (in my experience) a significant amount of men who still "need" to pay. Whether this is out of feeling emasculated, believing it's a "shit test", thinking it's an inherently male trait, or just being uncomfortable having the provider role switched.

It makes me wonder if the women who still feel entitled to having the guy pay are usually dating these kinds of men? So when they finally meet a truly egalitarian man who wants to split, it comes across as odd or unmasculine?

Also, the excuse of "women shouldn't pay because we spend more money to get ready" is bullshit. Nobody is forcing them to go get their hair, nails, makeup done + apparently brand new clothes for a first or second date. Yes, be hygienic and wear clean, appropriate clothing...but if you're spending $300 to get ready for a meal at a local restaurant, that's on you.

This is so funny. I’m late 30’s and when i was single in my early 30’s, you come in that area where your optional dating age spans like 20 years. You have the 20-something’s that want an old guy, and the 40-something’s that want a young gun. And your own age that wants to settle down.

The older woman and the woman my own age didn’t even hestitated paying for the date, no way they were gonna pay a dime for anything in the early stages.

The twenty-something’s actually insisted on paying the first date, almost every time. Pretty crazy.
