Two years ago my life changed forever when my wife of eight years left our home and didn't come back. There were lots of "it's not you, it's me" speeches, mostly over text. She had no interest in the pets, alimony, the house, stuff, nothing. She just wanted to be told where to sign and start a new life.
Our divorce was uncontested and we had a good amount of equity in the house (thanks to an insane market) so as far as divorces go, I got off light. But as you all know, your separation date becomes important when you're working with an attorney so it's a date that cemented itself in my brain.
Two years later, it's a regular Friday for everyone in my life, probably including my ex and her family. But for me it's the two-year anniversary of the beginning of the end. I didn't leave the house for a week and I barely ate. I was inconsolable and lost. It's a little lonely knowing that I'm the only one who sees today as even remotely significant.
I'm through the worst of it now and I've accomplished a lot since then, including buying my own place and starting a new job. But I can't help but remember how awful that first day, week, and month were.
Moving forward, I plan to celebrate the day the divorce finalized. But honestly I hope I forget the significance of today in the next few years.
