Hi guys and girls, I have some time to kill so I thought I'd share how I go about reading a woman, what cues I look for, and how I try to orient myself socially. I differ from a lot of the traditional advice on here because I don't focus so much on classic IOIs and body language. Why? Because a) that's all subjective, and b) those things are mostly conscious, so you're seeing what she wants you to see, and not necessarily the truth.
So first I'm gonna walk through how I read a woman's personality and the signs she gives off. Then I'm gonna move on to cues towards investment/buy-in. And then I'll wrap up with some key tips and little pointers. Hopefully this will all make sense.
Cold Reading A Woman
The first thing to understand is that women and men have far more in common than we have different. The key difference between men and women is that our sexual agendas and many of our forms of gender expression are reciprocal. They're meant to fit together like a lock and a key. But in order to understand what kind of man she's trying to attract and what she's looking for - you need to understand her as an individual.
The main personality schema I use with people is the Tridimensional Personality Model. Vin DiCarlo based much of his "Pandora's Box" product upon this model as well. The thing I like about it is how it is simple, speaks equally well to both genders, and is based in neurochemistry. The idea behind it is that there are three axes which define our temperament (or our emotional wiring):
- Novelty-Seeking
- Harm-Avoidance
- Reward Dependence
The first could be best summarized as Type-A vs Type-B personalities. High Novelty Seekers tend to be impulsive, extroverted, and high-energy. Low Novelty-Seekers tend to be reserved, disciplined, and introverted. Most women are not high-Novelty Seeking, so the ones who are should stand out very clearly.
Harm Avoidance basically defines where people stand on pursuing pleasure versus avoiding pain. Your average woman tends to be more Harm Avoidant than your typical guy, but the gender split is less distinct on this one. People who are high in Harm Avoidance tend more towards introversion, neuroticism, and caution. They live in their heads and have trouble getting out of them. People who are low in Harm Avoidance are the opposite. The best heuristic for this one is repressed vs no-filter.
And then finally we have Reward Dependence which is the trait that most clearly breaks down along gender lines. Women tend to be much more Reward Dependent than men, which means they're more aggreeable, less assertive, and respond much stronger to cues of approval and affiliation. Whereas people who are low in Reward Dependence tend to be task-oriented versus people-oriented, much more disagreeable, and assertive.
I could really do a whole post on this topic alone, but it's important to understand this so you know what to expect. High Novelty-Seeking women tend to play the field, while Low Novelty-Seeking women tend to get invested in one guy at a time. High Harm Avoidance women like to chase a guy sexually, because it allows them to feel in control, while Low Harm Avoidance women prefer a more risque and high energy approach. High Reward Dependence women are your stereotypical girly-girls, while Low Reward Dependence women tend to have a masculine streak a mile wide and are more pragmatic.
Now let's move on to some cues.
Eye Contact
Eye contact for me is my go-to cue to read a woman's interest level. First because it's often unconscious, second because it never lies. The more often a woman makes and holds eye contact with you, the more focused and/or attracted she is to you.
Let's say you're at a bar and a woman catches your eye from across the room.
If she looks away in less than a second, it was probably unconscious and might not mean anything.
If she holds it for a moment, and then looks away - probably still unconscious, but it telegraphs a little more interest.
If she holds it for a mental 1-3 second count, now it's deliberate and you've got her attention and you should approach. That's the true three second rule.
If she holds it and then smiles, that's a deliberate approach signal. Get the idea?
This also applies in conversation and when trying to figure out when to go in for the kiss. If she's hold eye contact with you, and you let the conversation lapse and she keeps holding it...just move in. Odds are she'll meet you halfway or subtly indicate that she's expecting a kiss (or she's just spaced out and oblivious, it can happen). Whereas if she's conversing with you and you're not getting that held eye contact, she's either still on the fence or not feeling it.
Investment Cues
Perhaps the best way to gauge a woman's interest level is to look at her investment level. If she is heavily invested in her interaction with you, she's either into you, or she thinks she can get something out of the conversation. That's when you should read the vibe/her body language to get a clearer idea.
But my point is, if you want to know whether or not a woman is Receptive, Neutral, or Unreceptive - look at her decisions. Once again, she might act flirty or hard to get, but the decisions don't lie. And it goes something like this:
-Initiation - this is the clearest green light of interest from a woman because most women don't initiate with guys. There is psychological safety in ambiguity and many women aren't comfortable giving that up. The High-Novelty Seeking and/or Low Harm Avoidance types are the ones most likely to do this. Either way, it's usually a big sign of interest and it's meant as a cue for guys to notice her and start taking the lead. If a girl is Receptive towards you and you let her go cold, you have only yourself to blame.
-Reciprocation. - this is another green light, just less overt. What reciprocation means is you flirt with her and she responds positively and/or flirts back. This means that she's buying into a romantic/sexual frame between you guys. Doesn't mean she's sold, just means that she is actively exploring making something happen between you guys.
-Compliance.- Compliance is when the lines between green and yellow get blurry. This is a woman will go along with whatever you're doing/saying, but is not actively reciprocating or putting herself out there. Passive investment versus active investment is the key distinction. The reason why this is important is because guys will often mistake this for a solid green light or a neutral yellow when it's really neither. It's "I'm cool with this for now and wanna see where it goes, but don't do anything crazy."
The reason why I focus on these varying shades of green light is because most guys once they get some experience can tell the difference between Receptive/Neutral and Unreceptive. Unreceptive is relatively simple - it is simply the absence of interest/investment because the opposite of love isn't hate, but indifference.
What guys do have trouble with is figuring out the difference between Receptive and Neutral and figuring when is the right time to make moves. Hopefully this makes things a lot simpler.
And I think that's enough for now, I don't want this to turn into some massive wall of text. This certainly isn't the last word on calibration, there's loads more to say. But this should be enough to spark some conversation or help out guys who are just getting their feet wet.
